This page will help you understand TomTom in WoW Classic and the use of coordinates in  “/way”, a commonly used term in multiple guides intended for a GPS navigation system. Other keywords such as waypoints, coordinates, or other terms used to refer to x,y.

Typically, you will see coordinates be used in the style of “/way x y location-name”; they are commands for some addons to help the user find the location of something, someone, or otherwise. To better understand this, keep reading, and examples will be shown.

The main addon referred to when coordinates are mentioned is called TomTom, a sat-nav style addon that can interact with one or multiple waypoints for the players’ convenience, which is the aim of this article.

Introduction to the use of addons for coordinates and navigation

Waypoints are typically not helpful in Classic World of Warcraft Hardcore without the use of addons – typically, the average player will have some addons that have some use to the game world that members of the community have developed with specific functions in mind, such as this one – the use of coordinates to find your way around Azeroth.

Typically, the main addon referred to when coordinates come to mind is an addon called TomTom; however, this is not the only helpful addon in this aspect. This guide will mainly cover how to use TomTom, as well as some examples of other addons that have coordinates built in or have functions with TomTom to some capacity.

TomTom

TomTom, a sat-nav or GPS style addon intended to be used for coordinates and in concordance with other addons created by jnwhiteh, downloadable from Curseforge. This addon is typically standalone or a dependency for many different addons that require the use of directing the player from their current coordinates to another coordinate.

This addon includes an arrow, a location, and the distance to that location. This is useful for players to find something, somewhere, as with most online sources/guides. This is not the only addon to provide player coordinates, but it has the most functions to do so.

How to use TomTom

The Player has found coordinates to find a person, ie, coordinates to Deputy Willem, a quest giver in Northshire; his coordinates are: 48.2, 43.0.

Having installed TomTom, this information is helpful – the user has to input intothe general chat:

“/way 48.2, 52.84 Deputy Willem”

Typing "/way 48.20, 52.84 Deputy Willem" into Game chat as a way to get the addon to function. Demonstrative example.

The addon should announce as a TomTom command that it is now directing the Player towards Deputy Willem.

The result of Typing "/way 48.20, 52.84 Deputy Willem" into Game chat as a way to get the addon to function. Demonstrative example.

You’ll notice that there is now an arrow on the screen. This arrow, by default, can be dragged to the appropriate position on the screen. You’ll want it to be easily visible, somewhat centred, but not in the way of mobs, your bars, and any other factors you’d like to see. Later in the guide, I’ll show you how to make the arrow non-interactable once it is set up correctly.

There will be a coordinates block, which helps the player work out their current coordinates.

There is information about which direction the objective is, what the name of the aim is, and how far it is in metres. The three stars indicate the estimated time of arrival when we start moving.

Showing the arrow in game resulted from Typing "/way 48.20, 52.84 Deputy Willem" into Game chat as a way to get the addon to function. Demonstrative example.

Observe the Arrow, it will point towards the coordinates input, with an arrow of varying colours. By Default Red means the Player is facing the opposite direction, Orange means the Player is facing somewhat the right direction and Green means the Player is completely facing the correct direction, this is shown as a gradient.

Once turned away from the arrow, showing how it changes color.

It is simple to start using, however it can be less than optimal for gameplay especially at the Hardcore level, as such the Player would most likely want to change the visibility, the urgency of new waypoints being made is much higher and the risk of misclicking is more dangerous possibly resulting in death, which is why I’d recommend you to read on to how to configure this addon, however if you aren’t wanting to, you can refer to the images used for each setting below:

Configuring TomTom

At the time of making this guide, the newest version should be TomTom-v4.0.7-release and would be the version shown in the screenshots. However, the menu typically doesn’t change much between updates.

To bring up the configuration menu, the user needs to type /TomTom. This will bring up a selection of options to choose from. We’ll go through what each section covers and what the ideal settings are.

Best configuration for Classic Hardcore TomTom

  • General Options
  • Coordinate Block
  • Waypoint Arrow
  • Minimap
  • World Map
  • Data Feed Options
  • Waypoints Profile
  • Options Profile

‘Announce new waypoints when they are added’ – Enable – This is the addon announcing when new waypoints are added, this is good for the player when setting own waypoints as it gives a visual confirmation that the waypoint creation has worked. Other addons could also add waypoints and it would be vitally useful for the Player to be aware of the changes. Leave Enabled.

‘Ask for confirmation on “Remove All”‘ – Enable – This ensures that no accidental batch deletions are done, which are usually difficult to reverse, this setting would not come in useful for most users of this addon as batch waypoints are more complicated, however generally speaking it is a good practice to leave Enabled so any decisions regarding deletions are definite and final.

‘Save new waypoints until I remove them’ – Enable – Acts as a toggle switch to permanently save new waypoints and be stored indefinitely until the user manually deletes them. This is good for remembering locations as potential return points, however – if too many waypoints are made then it may get cluttered. I suggest leaving this enabled, but remember to manually remove them eventually.

‘Clear waypoint distance’ – 10 meters – refers to the distance before the waypoint is considered ‘arrived’ at and stops directing you to the waypoint. This is personal preference but default at 10 meters seems to be fine for most users.

‘Automatically set a waypoint when I die’ – Does not matter in Hardcore, but in non-hardcore modes, this would refer to the spirit guidance to your corpse wherein the player would be lead back to their corpse.

‘Reset waypoint display options to current’ – refocuses the waypoint, if multiple waypoints are set, it sets the current one to the most relevant one, i.e. closest, most relevant, usually useful if you’ve veered off course on purpose and want to focus on a different waypoint. Use this when you’re intentionally ignoring the previous waypoint/ a different waypoint is more useful.

TomTom Provides you with a floating coordinate display that can be used to determine your current position. These options can be used to enable or disable this display, or customize the block’s display.

‘Enable Coordinate block‘ – Disabled – this shows the coordinates block, which is typically not that useful for most players unless precise coordination is beneficial, which is relatively rare in hardcore – or the Player wants to mark their current location for future visits. The argument being that the coordinates block could potentially clutter up the screen. I’ve had runs with it enabled and others with it disabled. For Hardcore I’d recommend Disabled as if coordinates are needed they are also on the map if enabled.

The below settings are relevant only if the user has kept the coordinates block enabled.

‘Lock Coordinate block’ – Enabled after correct placement – This disables the ability to move the coordinates block, I’d heavily recommend the player to adjust the block to their liking before locking it in place, to avoid

‘Coordinate Accuracy’ – 2 places – This setting is for the sake of simplicity, the coordinates can be displayed as 42.8 or 42.80, I think accuracy for little to no difference in clutter is worthwhile, and could be the difference between finding a NPC inside a building quicker or even not at all.

Display Settings

Purely up to Preference – for visual reasons, the user could have difficulty reading the coordinate block and so can change the background colour and Border colour for visibility or simply just for aesthetic reasons ie to match stream overlays, general colour of other addons.

Block height and width are changeable, the user could think the block is too big and cluttering and want to make it smaller, or require it to be bigger for readability.

Font Size refers to the text inside, this is relevant if the block is resized.

Reset position places it back to its’ default location, which is the middle of the screen. This is useful if the block has somewhat gone out of sight or bugged in some form.

Update throttle – default – the frequency in which the block is updated, I’d recommend leaving this at the default value as lower may cause delays, and higher is too frequent in my opinion.

TomTom provides an arrow that can be placed anywhere on the screen. Similar to the arrow in “Crazy Taxi” it will point you towards your next waypoint

‘Enable floating waypoint arrow’ – Enabled – This refers to the main functionality of the addon as a whole, to disable this would mean the arrow is not visible anymore, this would be useful if the user wants to keep the other functionalities of the addon but find the arrow excessive or unnecessary.

Automatically set waypoint arrow – Enabled – Enables the new waypoint to be automatically directed to.

Lock waypoint arrow – Enabled – Avoids the user being able to drag and reposition the arrow, I’d recommend to position it ideally then enable this setting to avoid mis clicks costing spell casts and potentially character lives in hardcore WoW.

Enable the right click contextual menu – Disabled – personally I’ve never had to use the functionality of the contextual menu, however if you are likely to send waypoints to other players, use quicker ways to access settings then leave this enabled.

Disable all mouse input – enabled – for the same reasoning as the above, avoids the user being able to drag and reposition the arrow or use the contextual menu, I’d recommend to position it ideally then enable this setting to avoid mis clicks costing spell casts and potentially character lives in hardcore WoW.

Automatically set to next closest waypoint – Enable – This usually works in abidance with addons for questing or help the player for farming/route reasons.

Allow closest waypoint to be outside current zone – disabled – I’d set it to disabled as in Classic World of Warcraft Hardcore, there are no guaranteed safeguards to ensure you’re not going to die if you accidentally wander off to a higher level zone. If you are wanting to go to another zone, I’d recommend to do travel intentionally.

Arrival distance – 15 Meters – This is the distance in which the arrow stops pointing in in the x y axis, but points at the ground to indicate you’ve arrived at the waypoint.

Play a sound when arriving at a waypoint – Disabled.

Channel to play the ping through – Does not matter.

‘Hide the crazy arrow display during pet battles’ – Does not matter – in Hardcore, but in later versions of World of Warcraft, this would refer to the arrow trying to direct you during in game pet battles.

‘Allow the corpse arrow to override other waypoints’ – Does not matter in Hardcore, but in non-hardcore modes, this would refer to the spirit guidance to your corpse wherein the player would be lead back to their corpse.

Waypoint Arrow Display settings – Purely up to Preference – for visual reasons, the user could have difficulty reading the coordinate block and so can change the colours for visibility or aesthetic reasons, the size of the arrows and text due to preference, readability or otherwise.

Show estimated time to arrival – Disabled – I dislike this personally, as it changes too frequently and I can generally gather how long it’ll take me to get to the waypoint, however it could be useful if you would like to time it more precisely.

Show the distance to the waypoint – Enabled – This is a vital part of the arrow, I find that if the distance wasn’t there then you’d be lacking vital information most of the time.

Distance unit to use – Default – Use an unit of measurement you’re comfortable with.

Place the arrow in the high strata – Enable – when you are having issues with it falling behind other windows / addons.

TomTom can display multiple waypoint arrows on the minimap. These options control the quality of these waypoints

Enable minimap waypoints – Enabled – This allows you to see where the new waypoint is relative to the map.

Display waypoints from other zones – Disabled – This is independent of the arrow/ other means of directing you towards it so it won’t contribute to a danger. Disable if you feel there’s a lot of clutter on the minimap in other zones but don’t want to remove the waypoints. Generally speaking in Hardcore, carefulness takes priority over all else and so avoiding another zone when it is not intended is required.

Enable mouseover tooltips – Enable – this allows you to add notes to your waypoints and give reminders as to what they are for.

Enable the right-click contextual menu – Disable – personally I’ve never had to use the functionality of the contextual menu, however if you are likely to send waypoints to other players, use quicker ways to access settings then leave this enabled.

Minimap Icon Size – Size 10 – I dislike the waypoint being too large on the minimap as it disallows me to see other content so I’ve made it a habit to make it smaller and declutter the often already cluttered minimap.

Minimap icon – default – Green circle has the ideal visibility, other options tend to be too difficult to see.

TomTom can display multiple waypoints on the world map. These options control the display of these waypoints

Enable world map waypoints – Enabled -This acts as a toggle for all world map waypoints created. I’d recommend keeping this enabled as the user could benefit from having waypoints shown on the world map, exception being if the user feels that the world map is too cluttered. This shows all waypoints around Azeroth on the world map, usually accessed via the ‘M’ Key.

Display waypoints from other zones – Enabled – As the user could benefit from having waypoints shown on the world map, this acts as a toggle for all world map waypoints created outside the current zone the player is in. I’d leave it enabled as generally speaking if the user has followed the rest of this guide then it should be a visual indicator wherein the user is not directed towards dangerous new zones.

Enable mouseover tooltips – Enabled – Typically when a waypoint is created it could have vital useful information displayed about that waypoint, ie what resides at that waypoint or what it represents.

Allow control-right clicking on map to create new waypoint – Enabled – It allows for quick waypoint creation, most users won’t know about this feature as it is not announce nor used by most. Could be used to make an efficient route through objectives in advance. Though note – Some addons may change the functionality of this addon slightly, instead of Control-Right click, some users may have defaulted to using Alt Right click instead which can be changed at another setting.

Enable the right-click contextual menu – Enabled – This allows for extremely easy interaction with waypoints, as options to set as current target, send to other players and removal of waypoints are very easy to understand as opposed to text chat based commands to do the same functions.

Create note modifier – Preference, though I use Control – This is as control has no other function for me whereas alt poses some risks like alt tabbing and such. Combinations complicate the process and so I’d recommend single buttons, and typically some users bind shift to the action bar for efficiency and avoiding use mouse clicks.

Player Coordinates

Enable showing the player coordinates – Enabled – if Disabled then the user would have to ensure map and coordinates block are both visible rather than use the simple overlay on the map. This is an useful feature so I’d recommend to keep this setting enabled, it also matches the cursor coordinates on the other side of the map.

Player coordinate accuracy – Accuracy to 2 places – As less accuracy can cause confusion, ensure that all coordinates used throughout TomTom is set to 2 when given the option as one place of accuracy could cause players to not find the waypoint as efficiently.

Player coordinate offset – This setting had no effect during my testing phase, so I’d recommend to leave it as default in case it has some effect.

Cursor coordinates

Enable showing cursor coordinates – Enabled – This helps the planning phase and so I’d recommend to leave it enabled, this can help set temporary waypoints and generally provides useful information in a non-cluttering style.

Cursor coordinate accuracy – Accuracy to 2 places – As less accuracy can cause confusion, ensure that all coordinates used throughout TomTom is set to 2 when given the option as one place of accuracy could cause players to not find the waypoint as efficiently.

cursor coordinate offset – This setting had no effect during my testing phase, so I’d recommend to leave it as default in case it has some effect.

Icon control

World map icon size – Size 10 – I dislike the waypoint being too large on the world map as it disallows me to see other content so I’ve made it a habit to make it smaller and declutter the often already cluttered world map but keeps it big enough that it still remains visible.

World map icon – default – Green circle has the ideal visibility, other options tend to be too difficult to see.

To see changes for this section you may need to /reload.

TomTom is capable of providing data sources via LibDataBroker, which allows them to be displayed in any LDB compatible display. These options enable or disable the individual feeds, but will only take effect after a reboot.

To simplify the above, this means that the TomTom can feed data to multiple addons that have use of the player’s coordinates to do a function, LDB would display this data to compatible addons that have been configured to work with LDB – This is at the mod creator level not the user.

The Player can choose to change the ability to send data to other addons, how frequently to do so, the accuracy of the data sent however, the changes aren’t instant and would require a restart of WoW.

Provide a LDB data source for coordinates – Enable for future reference or if the user plans to install other addons – Otherwise enabling/disabling may have no effect on most users.

Provide a LDB data source for crazy arrow – Enable for future reference or if the user plans to install other addons – Otherwise enabling/disabling may have no effect on most users.

Coordinate feed accuracy – accuracy to 2 places – As most other aspects of this addon has been configured to two places, I’d recommend same for maximum compatibility with other addons.

Coordinate feed throttle – Most users would leave this as default (0.3)

Crazy arrow feed throttle – Most users would leave this as default (0.1)

You can change the active database profile, so you can have different settings for every character. Reset the current profile back to its default values, in case your configuration is broken, or you simply want to start over.

Generally, this page is more so about a functionality rather than a customisation. The aim of this page is to give some options to allow multiple characters to have their own routes set or to copy from other pre-existing profiles.

Reset Profile – Allows the User to revert any changes made

You can either create a new profile by entering a name in the edit box, or choose one of the already existing profiles. Typically profiles are worthwhile once players set up multiple waypoints that aren’t relevant for every character and would like distinction.

New – Typing into this box will make an ‘Okay’ button appear, if the user wants to make a new profile for this character, they can name it appropriately here and changes are automatically saved, Any characters including the current can take any profile made from Existing profiles.

Copy from – Copy the settings from one existing profile into the currently active profile.

Delete a profile – Delete existing and unused profiles from the database to save space, and cleanup the SavedVariables files.

Setting multiple Waypoints in WoW World of Warcraft TomTom

This section teaches you how to make use of multiple waypoints and work out your ideal method for navigating them.

How to use Chat Commands

Via Chat – example shows adding three waypoints, then setting them to remove themselves on completion, and changing the waypoint to the next nearest one:

  1. /way 30.00,30.00 Waypoint 1
  2. /way 31.00,30.00 Waypoint 2
  3. /way 32.00,30.00 Waypoint 3
  4. /tomtom set removecomplete
  5. /tomtom set closest

How to use Map Commands

Via Map

Ctrl Right click multiple areas roughly where you want the waypoints.

Set Waypoint Arrow to go to nearest one automatically, this would take a little planning and ensuring that no other waypoints are closer than the intended waypoint.

Which method is better?

I’d personally prefer to use the graphical user interface of the addon, as manual configuration requires more work.

Some add-ons or online sources can provide a large dataset of coordinates for use. This would be put into the Waypoints Profile section to achieve a similar effect, though this is usually for a specified action – i.e., optimal experience farming routes, quest objectives, or, less commonly, general wayfinding.

If you want it to continuously loop, avoid setting “remove once completed.” Instead, it should guide you to the next one upon arrival. This approach typically works best when the start and end points are roughly close.

Another method is to use an addon called Routes, a primarily gathering addon. This addon would create a line on the map for the player to follow for optimal routes around a zone with specific gathering nodes in mind.

Chat commands

/wayb or /wayback – removes a waypoint

/way reset all – Deletes all active waypoints.

/way list – Shows all currently active waypoints.

/tomtom set crazyarrow or /way arrow – Toggles the navigation arrow on or off.

/cway or /closestway – sets pointer to nearest waypoint

/ttpaste – TomTom paste, requires an addon called paste.

/tomtom – Brings up the menu for TomTom configuration.

/way , /tway or /tomtomway – are all create new waypoint commands.

/local – creates a waypoint at your current location

/way block – Toggles the Coordinates Block on or off.

Other addons

LDB

This is theoretically not another addon, but rather a framework in which TomTom relies on, LibDataBroker is a lightweight data feeding system for World of Warcraft, it allows cross addon communication efficiently, if the user wants to see the information exchanged, they’ll need an addon called ChocolateBar.

Paste

This addon allows players to bulk import multiple waypoints into TomTom efficiently. It’s beneficial for tracking achievements or following extensive routes.

RestedXP

RestedXP is a highly optimized levelling guide addon for World of Warcraft, designed to help players level quickly and efficiently in Classic.

Explore with TomTom

Designed for explorers aiming to uncover every corner of Azeroth, this addon works seamlessly with TomTom to guide players to undiscovered zones and hidden spots. It provides automatic waypoints based on account progression and real-time tracking of explored areas.

Thomas has been writing game guides for over a year, covering whatever he's currently sunk into. He doesn't write about anything he hasn't actually played, which usually isn't a problem since he plays too much of everything anyway. Rocket League ate enough of his life to get him to Grand Champion, and he's got several max-level, fully geared characters sitting in World of Warcraft from various binges over the years. Recent obsessions include ARC Raiders, Battlefield, For Honor, and Rainbow Six Siege, with plenty of others in rotation. He's also worked behind the scenes for a well-known gaming creator on video production and editorial pieces, so the guides here are shaped as much by that side of the industry as by the hours logged in-game. Every tip, build, and location in his guides comes from his own playthroughs. If he hasn't tested it, it doesn't get published.
