This Player data from January 2025 to determine which classes have the highest success rates in reaching max level, as well as a class tier list.
WoW Hardcore Death Stats
By breaking down survival statistics from the Anniversary Servers, we aim to help you choose the best class for leveling based on actual success rates, not just theory. The data gathered is from Deathlog.

However, this is based on the average player, including those who die early. So, while this information is helpful, it shouldn’t be the only deciding factor. You should also consider the average level before death as an indicator of early-game strength. They are listed in descending order of success rates.
Class Tier List

This tier list is a mixture of how the classes suit Playstyles, how fun the class is as you’ll be spending a lot of time on this character, or if things go wrong, how good this class is in that situation, as danger is likely to happen a handful of times, which could cost your character. The class tier list is ranked by the community, focusing on survivability.

Warrior
First is Warriors, with the highest probability of reaching level 60, at 4.04%. Out of 66,000 Warriors, nearly 3,000 made it to level 60. This is the highest probability to reach level 60, despite being considered an underpowered class. Ironically, this underpowering is possibly since players typically equip their characters with the best available gear, as doing otherwise would cause them to fall further behind. They are not a recommended first class to play unless a challenge is wanted.
This Class teaches critical thinking skills and awareness far more than any other class. Warriors are typically always underpowered and so disallow overconfidence deaths, unlike other classes, requiring careful gearing and planning before every encounter. Warriors typically only do content multiple levels below their current level.

Priest
Second on this list is the Priest class with a 2.22% chance of reaching level 60. Priests are considered a perfect class to play, with excellent healing output and consistent damage dealing thanks to wands. Priests are considered the best Healing Class of Hardcore.
Priests are ideally going to use wands as their main damage, with talents allowing for 25% more damage with wands. This is a good tactic as it leaves all mana for healing; their damage is good enough for leveling, but their primary role is to heal.

Paladin
The third class are Paladins, with a 2.01% chance of reaching level 60, considered the kindergarten version of warriors, they have a simple rotation with high damage output, potential high healing output and good escape utility, so this is not that surprising, however they are deemed a boring to play class with most of their 1 to 60 ability rotation is using the same buttons unlocked at an extremely low level. Another note is that they are able to wear plates after level 40, boosting survivability.
The Average probability of reaching 60 with a class is 1.76%, all above this have a higher than average chance, below have a lower than average chance, though they are still potential classes to pick.

Mage
Mages, the undisputed kings of crowd control, have a 1.59% probability of reaching level 60, which is lower than average, potentially due to overconfidence or lack of awareness when applying crowd control.
Mages are seen as a powerful class, and are an essential part in most dungeons thanks to their polymorph, frost nova, or conjure food/mana water. Mages are an overconfidence kills class as kiting is given as an option relatively early game, and so players can build confidence over time and potentially start AOE Farming, where it takes one resist to mess things up.

Druid
Druid, a class only able to be played by Night Elves on the Alliance side, with a 1.31% probability of reaching 60.
Druids are a Jack of all trades class, with the ability to perform strong as a healer, tank or dps, they are considered an excellent class to play, except they are extremely slow to level early game with a lower than average damage, but are strong mid game and even late game. They have the best mobility before mounts thanks to Cat Form, a very versatile class to play and definitely amongst the most fun classes once you get past level 20.

Shaman
Shaman, a Horde-only class with a lower than average probability of 1.23% to reach level 60, starts strong but averages after level 20, as indicated by the much higher than average likelihood of gaining over level 10 being 65%
Shamans are a class that uses Totems to assist with crowd control, healing, and damage. Shamans have the option to heal or DPS as their primary role. As DPS, they can deal damage in melee range or through spell casting. Totems can lead to accidental mob pulls and are generally inefficient.

Warlock
Warlocks have options to choose a Tank void walker or a DPS Imp as a pet. Warlocks have a low 1.20% probability to reach level 60, making them rank so low.
They aren’t the best at any single aspect, with worse pets than hunters, and they lack effective crowd control. They rely on DOT (damage over time), which means they can’t reset fights as effectively, as aggro isn’t as easy to lose in dangerous situations.
Warlocks can regain mana using Life Tap; however, this notoriously makes you lose health and makes you every healer’s worst nightmare in a dungeon. They can give out healing Stones, which restore 30% Total HP, which can be lifesavers, and teleport players to dungeon entrances. Both of which use Soul Shards, which require a little bit of preparation.

Rogue
Rogues are a fast-paced and enjoyable class to play, but their lack of strong escape tools early on makes them a risky choice for Hardcore. Until they unlock Vanish at level 22, they have very few ways to get out of bad situations. This makes early levels particularly dangerous, as a single mistake can lead to a quick and unavoidable death.
Their high burst damage allows them to eliminate enemies quickly, and Stealth gives them the unique ability to avoid dangerous encounters altogether. However, Rogues struggle in longer fights due to their lack of self-healing, and if things go south, they have little room for error. Many deaths come from taking on too many enemies or underestimating survivability before Vanish becomes available.
Despite the risks, Rogues remain one of the most enjoyable classes to play, with a high skill ceiling and a playstyle that rewards precision, planning, and execution.

Hunter
Surprisingly, the Lowest Survival Rate
Hunters are often expected to be one of the strongest leveling classes, yet in Hardcore, they have the lowest probability of reaching level 60 at just 1.07%. This is likely due to their heavy reliance on pets, which serve as their primary defence. If the pet dies, the Hunter is suddenly left in a highly vulnerable position, often with no way to recover.
Hunters have some of the fastest leveling speeds thanks to their ranged damage and pet tanking, but their downfall often comes from overconfidence. Many Hunters pull too many enemies, assuming their pet can handle it, or fail to properly manage their pet’s health and threat, leading to sudden and unexpected deaths.
Their ability to kite enemies and control fights with traps and slows makes them a powerful class in the hands of a skilled player, but one small mistake—whether a mistimed Feign Death, a dead pet, or a poorly managed fight—often leads to a quick and brutal end.
Conclusion
When choosing classes, consider duo compatibility and the type of content you’ll likely cover. For instance, being a healer almost exclusively to run dungeons may be less than ideal, as they are usually second to die in group wipes, leaving some DPS classes to Roach out easier than healers can, as they’ll have agro after the tank.
It is not recommended for two healers to duo from levels 1 to 60. This journey can be slow and tedious, and increases the likelihood of needing to separate for dungeons, as most groups prefer not to have two healers if possible. The only exception to this is the druid, as druids can fulfill other roles as well.
When a healer is not the primary healer, they are referred to as an off-hand healer. The responsibility of this offhand healer is to provide healing when the main healer cannot, or to step in when the main healer forgets to heal someone who may be in danger of dying.
If you’re just getting started or returning to the game, it’s essential to understand how your class choice affects your early gameplay experience. For example, leveling a caster becomes much easier when you know where to find the best wands for every level, which can dramatically boost your damage output between spell casts. Similarly, if you’re playing a stealthier class, our Rogue guide from level 1 to 60 walks you through the optimal path, talents, and gear so you don’t waste time on trial and error.
