“What’s the difference between Elune Season 9 and Area 52 Free-Pick?” is one of the most common questions asked by players diving into WoW Ascension for the first time, with thousands of players online at any given time, and regular updates changing how things work.

WoW Ascension offers multiple ways to experience classless World of Warcraft gameplay. In this guide, we’ll cover both major server types so you can pick the one that fits your playstyle best.

The overall aim of Ascension is to provide unique combinations; to beat the staleness of retail wow. The differences between the two servers lie in how they enable you to do that. You can switch between the two at any time, with characters in either.

Since this page has been published, there are now an additional 2 servers based around the Bronzebeard Mode – Mulfurion and Bronzebeard. They are the same server, but Mulfurion was created due to massive demands for the original server. Read about it here.

Server Overview

To simplify the differences, the core difference is that both servers provide uniqueness, though Elune forces you to stick with whatever it generates, and Area-52 allows for complete freedom (Though players can choose to go through a fixed system via an archetype, or to choose every ability via free-pick).

Elune – The Wildcard Experience

The first server type we’ll cover is Elune, which is Project Ascension’s Wildcard Mode realm. Instead of picking your abilities like a normal character creator, you get random abilities as you level up. This creates completely unpredictable builds that you literally can’t make anywhere else.

In the Random Ability Generator, there are different rarities. This level 1 character gains a rare ability (Bear Form).

This server has more potential for uniqueness, as there are infinitely more varieties that are more out of players’ control, so players are encouraged to deal with what they get, resulting in entirely different builds compared to an Area 52 experience, where every level can be planned.

Think of it like opening card packs – you never know what you’re going to get, but sometimes you hit the jackpot with an insane combination that shouldn’t work but totally does, other times, you get a cluster of abilities that don’t work well together.

What is Area 52 WoW

This is the opposite approach. On Area 52, you have total freedom to pick any ability from any class in the game. Want to be a Mage with a tamed pet? Go for it. Stealth Warrior with Hunter traps? Absolutely. The Free Pick system lets you theory-craft to your heart’s content in a guaranteed way.

There are two distinct types of characters in Area 52: Archetypes and Free Pickers. Below, we will explain them in more detail.

Archetypes – Choosing a special class not usually available in World of Warcraft

You can choose to do an archetype, where the game decides your next ability, building towards an ultimate, unique class, such as a healer hunter.

Following the Grove Ranger Archetype, all I have to do is level up, and I’ll get abilities chosen for me, which will eventually make me a master at healing and using hunter abilities.

Be aware that choosing an archetype locks you into a build draft, meaning you don’t have much choice if you don’t like the direction the character is going.

Free Pick – Choosing every ability and Talent for your character

I prefer it when the game allows you to craft your character via free-pick, where you can theory-craft a class to your own will, perhaps towards a similar archetype, where instead of a specific healing ability, you opt for another. This is achieved via a dashboard that is unlocked from level 1.

Idea of what class you want > Work towards it > Find things that Synergises with it

A lot of technical knowledge and general comfort with World of Warcraft is probably needed to utilize free-pick properly, and so it may take some asking around on forums to try and work out what works best for you.

Character Building: Random vs Free Choice

Elune Season 9: Embrace the Randomness Chaos

On Elune, when you create your character, you won’t pick a class because there aren’t any. At level 1, you roll a random ability, and as you level up, you keep getting more random abilities from the massive pool of spells across all classes.

Here’s the cool part: before level 10, you can reroll your starter abilities an unlimited number of times to experiment. After that, you’re stuck with what you get, but that’s where the fun begins.

Skill Cards are your ace in the hole – these let you guarantee specific abilities in your draft. If you really need that one spell to make your build work, skill cards are the way to get it.

The Prestige System is like New Game Plus. When you prestige, you reset to level 1 but keep all your gear, gold, skill cards, and other supplies, plus you earn rewards for doing it. It’s perfect for players who love the feeling of a fresh start.

Area 52 Free-Pick: Theory-Crafter’s Paradise

Area 52 gives you complete control. You can pick any ability and talent from any class, letting you create those dream builds like an “Icebound Knight” (Mage spells + Paladin talents) or a sneaky ranged attacker (Rogue + Hunter abilities).

On Character Creation, you can choose the type of Class you want, which leads to more specific cool combinations with little knowledge needed.

The Archetype System is perfect for new players. You choose a role and playstyle at character creation, and you’ll get a ready-to-play build from the Hero Architect. As you level, you automatically learn relevant spells and talents. Using Archetypes, there are three class types: Damage has 28 different classes, Healers have 13, and Tanks have 15 classes. Compared to WoW’s 14 Classes in total.

The Free-Pick System allows you to choose any ability you want. As you level up, you earn ability essence, which is used to unlock new abilities. The more powerful an ability is, the more ability essence it requires, as well as a minimum level to access it. You can build towards an archetype if you want.

Hero Architect 2.0 is where the magic happens for veterans. This advanced build creation tool lets you theory-craft extensively and share builds with the community. Good builds get hearted by other players, so you can quickly find what’s worth trying.

How to Actually Play Each Server

Elune Season 9 Gameplay Flow

Getting Started: Roll good starting abilities – aim for a damage spell, instant spell, heal, buff, or pet. Complete quests for Adventurer’s Caches that contain gear.

Your Leveling Journey:

  • Level 10: Battlegrounds unlock for massive XP gains
  • Level 15: Dungeons and the new Manastorm feature (infinite scaling dungeon with progressive rewards as you go deeper)
  • Every 10 levels: Visit Silus Dark Moon for Scrolls of Fortune to reroll abilities you don’t want

Level 60 and Beyond: This is where the real game starts. Analyze your random build, figure out what spells work together, and begin unlearning the weak stuff. Get more scrolls through Call Board quests (using Marks of Ascension currency) or any content in the game.

The key to Elune is adaptation – you can’t plan your build, so you need to be flexible and creative with whatever random abilities you get.

Area 52 Free-Pick Strategy

Character Building Process: Choose your primary stat (Strength/Agility/Intellect/Spirit), pick a core damage spell, then build everything around it. Pro tip: Use the search function to find talents that synergize with your chosen abilities.

The Mystic Enchantment System: This is the real endgame and what makes or breaks your build. You’re limited by rarity:

  • 1 Legendary power (build-defining effects)
  • 3 Epic powers (major game-changers)
  • Multiple Rare/Blue/Green powers (supplementary bonuses)

Smart Build Strategy: Start by looking at Legendary Mystic Enchantments first – these determine your build’s theme. Find one you like, learn the required spells it needs, then supplement with talents and other enchantments. Use Mystic Extracts to learn powers permanently, Mystic Orbs to enchant them, and Mystic Runes to reforge scrolls for better ones.

This is all about planning and optimization – you can spend hours theory-crafting the perfect build and testing different combinations.

Shared Features

Both servers offer the same core Ascension features:

  • Dual-Risk System: Choose between high-risk (full loot PvP) and low-risk options
  • Mystic Enchanting: Modify your spells in crazy ways
  • Manastorms: Scaling dungeons that level with you, including 15 TBC dungeons plus 5 custom boss encounters
  • Daily Quests and Mythic+: End-game progression systems

They both tend to scale with levels, the higher the level = the more variety and abilities, as this is key in an MMORPG such as WoW. Both take place in the same world, same quests (different players), and most quest rewards remain the same.

Which Server Should You Pick?

Pick Elune Season 9 If You:

  • Love surprises and don’t mind adapting on the fly
  • Enjoy the thrill of making weird ability combinations work
  • Like fresh seasonal starts and the prestige system
  • Want builds that literally can’t be made anywhere else
  • Think planning is overrated and prefer to wing it

Pick Area 52 Free-Pick If You:

  • Love theory-crafting and min-maxing
  • Want complete control over every aspect of your build
  • Prefer stable, long-term character progression
  • Are new to Ascension and want guidance
  • Enjoy sharing builds and trying community creations

Conclusion

Both servers offer incredible classless WoW experiences, but they cater to entirely different types of players. Elune Season 9 is for adventurers who love chaos and discovery – you never know what you’re going to get, but that’s half the fun. Area 52 Free-Pick is for strategists who want to craft the perfect character and optimize every detail.

The best part? Characters from seasonal servers, such as Elune, eventually merge into Area 52, allowing you to experience both systems. Start with the wild ride of Elune’s random system, then transition to the strategic depth of Area 52’s free-pick when the season ends.

Whether you choose to embrace the chaos or control every variable, both realms offer World of Warcraft experiences you can’t find anywhere else. Pick based on whether you prefer surprises or having a plan – either way, you’re in for something special.

Thomas has been writing game guides for over a year, covering whatever he's currently sunk into. He doesn't write about anything he hasn't actually played, which usually isn't a problem since he plays too much of everything anyway. Rocket League ate enough of his life to get him to Grand Champion, and he's got several max-level, fully geared characters sitting in World of Warcraft from various binges over the years. Recent obsessions include ARC Raiders, Battlefield, For Honor, and Rainbow Six Siege, with plenty of others in rotation. He's also worked behind the scenes for a well-known gaming creator on video production and editorial pieces, so the guides here are shaped as much by that side of the industry as by the hours logged in-game. Every tip, build, and location in his guides comes from his own playthroughs. If he hasn't tested it, it doesn't get published.
