Project Ascension’s classless system offers unprecedented freedom in character building, but this flexibility can be overwhelming for players seeking competitive PvP viability. With thousands of possible ability and talent combinations, identifying optimal builds requires extensive testing and a deep understanding of mechanics. This guide presents five thoroughly tested PvP builds that have proven successful across various skill levels and playstyles in Season 9, ranging from straightforward one-button rotations to more nuanced proc-based strategies that reward skilled execution.

Each build in this guide has been validated through actual battleground performance rather than theoretical calculations, ensuring practical effectiveness in real PvP scenarios. While Ascension’s frequent balance updates may result in specific numbers and interactions changing, the core and fundamental mechanics behind these builds remain sound and stable. Whether you’re leveling through battlegrounds or competing at endgame, understanding why these builds work – from the Moonfire spam’s instant-cast mobility to the Meteors build’s devastating burst windows – will enable you to adapt and optimize as the meta evolves.

Generally, most builds using those legendaries will function almost the same, with slight changes in support abilities.

Legacy of the Arcanist

This build centers on triggering meteor strikes through a straightforward one-button macro that anyone can use. You’ll prioritize Spell Power > Critical > Hit while avoiding haste altogether, as it disrupts your meteor timings. The build combines frost and fire abilities that work together to proc meteors at the perfect timing, shining in dungeons where you need both substantial single-target damage and massive area damage.

The key to success is understanding the timing between your abilities – Storm Strike sets up your meteor procs, and you follow a specific pattern to maximize damage. When facing multiple enemies, you’ll open with Arcane Orb and Starfall before settling into your standard rotation. While the build is popular in high-end content, many players don’t realize its full potential.

Essential Talents/REs: Channel Rage, Raging Strike, Twisted Mind, Fragmenting Glacier, Frozen Power, Lunar Guidance, Warden Flame, Molten Fury (3/3)

Important: Once fully set up, use this macro:

#showtooltip /castsequence reset=5 Stormstrike,Frostbolt,Sunfire,Earth Shock,Moonfire,Stormstrike,Frostbolt,Shadowflame,Earth Shock,Moonfire,Shadowburn /cast Deep Freeze /cast Shamanistic Rage /cast Cleave /cast Combustion /petattack

One with the Light

This paladin-inspired build transforms your physical attacks into holy damage while providing incredible self-healing. You’ll want Spell Power > Strength > Attack Power for stats, as spell power boosts both your holy damage and attack power. Perfect for farming and group content, you’ll use Crusader Strike and Divine Storm as main damage dealers, with Exorcist’s Slash providing massive burst.

What makes this build special is how Seal of Command multiplies your cleave damage exponentially – hitting six enemies can trigger eighteen seal procs. Your Divine Storm not only devastates groups but can fully heal you in dangerous situations. The build starts weak but becomes increasingly powerful as you unlock key abilities like Holy Fire, which you’ll weave in for instant casts and damage boosts.

Good Talents: One with the Light, Empowered Light, Holy Ascension, Divine Reset, Sanctified Wrath, Sanctity of Battle

Blood and Guts

Disembowel focuses on stacking bleeds before unleashing devastating execute combos, prioritizing Strength > Attack Power > Critical for maximum bleed and execute damage. The build struggles early on but becomes incredibly satisfying after level 40 when all your bleed synergies come online. You’ll build combo points with Mutilate, apply Disembowel to make targets bleed, then finish with Execute.

The rotation is straightforward but requires patience – this isn’t a build that performs well immediately. Death Mark enhances your Mutilate damage against bleeding targets, while Blood and Guts turns your executes into area attacks. While you’ll struggle with area damage early on, the payoff comes when you see those execute numbers climbing.

Good Talents/REs: Blood and Guts, Sudden Death, Deadly Combo, Seal of Fate, Find Weakness, Serrated Blades, Death Mark

Arcane Gunslinger

Arcane Gunslinger combines hunter and mage abilities to create a proc-based burst caster that becomes fully functional at just level 20. You’ll run Agility as your primary stat (though Intellect is possible), converting it to spell power through talents. You’ll spam Moonfire to fish for Missile Barrage procs, which transform your Arcane Missiles into rapid-fire devastation.

The build rewards good proc management – knowing when to hold charges versus spending them immediately separates good players from great ones. Shot Weaving adds physical damage between your missiles, while various talents boost your Arcane Shot for a powerful finisher. It’s more complex than pure Moonfire spam but offers better burst potential.

Good Talents: Missile Barrage, Shot Weaving, Arc Aim and Shot, Mental Quickness, Arcane Empowerment, Improved Arcane Shot, Zephyr

Fair warning: some of these builds might get nerfed by the time you read this, but that’s the nature of Ascension. They are generally the most overpowered and talked about builds in the PvP Ascension scene. Personally, I’ve played against and seen some of those builds in action while leveling my own characters, and I can say they usually hold top spots. For further definitive PvP while leveling domination, you’ll need good gear. Check out my other post: Ascension Heirlooms Guide. While the builds are still useful to learn for other aspects of the game such as Manastorms.

Thomas has been writing game guides for over a year, covering whatever he's currently sunk into. He doesn't write about anything he hasn't actually played, which usually isn't a problem since he plays too much of everything anyway. Rocket League ate enough of his life to get him to Grand Champion, and he's got several max-level, fully geared characters sitting in World of Warcraft from various binges over the years. Recent obsessions include ARC Raiders, Battlefield, For Honor, and Rainbow Six Siege, with plenty of others in rotation. He's also worked behind the scenes for a well-known gaming creator on video production and editorial pieces, so the guides here are shaped as much by that side of the industry as by the hours logged in-game. Every tip, build, and location in his guides comes from his own playthroughs. If he hasn't tested it, it doesn't get published.
