The Vegetable Stand

Updated 6 min read

The Vegetable Stand looks like the least interesting shop in town and holds the single most surprising line in it: every shovel in the game is sold here, by the greengrocer, and nowhere else. The Smithy carries a row for each one, buys them all and sells none. Past that it is the seed counter, which makes it the shop a farm starts at, and it has a rate that quietly gets worse the more you invest in it. Cabbage is ten a smile at its first tier and thirty at its second, so the first upgrade makes your existing crop three times worse overnight.

The Vegetable Stand looks like the least interesting shop in town and holds the single most surprising line in it. Every shovel in the game is sold here, by the greengrocer, and nowhere else.

Past that it is the seed counter, which makes it the shop a farm starts at. It also has a rate that quietly gets worse the more you invest in it, which is the thing worth knowing before you upgrade.

The only shovel counter in the game

the Smithy carries a row for every axe, pickaxe and shovel, buys all of them and sells not one. Sweep the other eighteen vendors and the picture does not change: no shop anywhere stocks an axe or a pickaxe, and the only digging tool on any shelf is here.

The shovels, one grade per tier

Bronze Shovel12160
Iron Shovel241,750
Steel Shovel3614,500

All three are priced flat rather than on a curve and he holds exactly one of each, so the number above is what you pay and upgrading him will not move it. He also refuses to buy back whichever grade he is currently selling, so the old one goes to the Smithy instead.

Buy the Iron Shovel here, sell the old one there

An Iron Shovel is 1,750 from this counter and carries 4 mastery. The Smithy pays 160 for the Bronze Shovel you were using, which is the full base price because a flat priced tool always sells for exactly that.

The Steel Shovel at 14,500 is the one to think twice about, since nobody in the game buys it back at any price.

The seed counter, and the grades above it

Every crop seed the game has is on this shelf from the first tier, at two to four coins each, alongside the crops themselves. Wheat seed at 2 and Carrot seed at 2 are the cheapest way to start a garden by a wide margin.

The produce is graded the way everything else in the game is, and the grades arrive with his tiers. Cabbage reaches III at his second, onion reaches III at his third, and pumpkin turns up at the second tier and only finishes at the third.

What the stand sells, and from when

Wheat seed, Carrot seed, Beet Seed, Cabbage seed12 to 4
Wheat, Carrot, Beet, Cabbage I, Apple12 to 7
Cabbage II and III, Onion I and II, Pumpkin I210 to 20
Onion III, Pumpkin II and III318 to 40
Apple Tree, Bush and Rhododendron Seedlings1100 to 150
Blueberry Seedling3250

The seedlings are the quiet cost. Apple Tree Seedling and Bush Seedling are 100 each and Rhododendron Seedling is 150, with only two of each on the shelf at the first tier, so an orchard is a slow purchase rather than a shopping trip. Blueberry Seedling at 250 waits for his third tier entirely.

The rate gets worse when you upgrade him

He takes produce for town happiness rather than coins, and this is the part that catches people. The batch size he wants goes UP with each tier while the smiles stay where they are, so a crop is worth less the better his shop gets.

What a smile costs in crops, tier by tier

Cabbage I10 each30 each25 each
Wheat20 each30 each25 each
Carrot15 each30 each25 each
Beet10 each30 each25 each
Cabbage IIINot sold yet22.5 each15 each
Onion IIINot sold yetNot sold yet10 each
Pumpkin IIINot sold yetNot sold yet5 each

Cabbage I is the clearest case. Ten of them buy a smile at his first tier and thirty at his second, so the first upgrade makes your existing crop three times worse overnight.

The way back is grade, not volume

Upgrading raises his happiness cap from 8 to 16 and then 25, so the total you can earn a week goes up even as the rate falls. The catch is that filling the bigger cap with basic crops takes three times the farm.

Graded produce is the answer. Pumpkin III at his third tier is five a smile, twice as good as Cabbage I managed at his first, and Onion III is ten. Upgrade the garden alongside the stand or the upgrade costs you.

One of the three shops that cost nothing to unlock

Market Stalls I is hidden until the story reveals it and then granted outright, so the Vegetable Stand, the Apothecary and the Tailor are the only shops in town that need no spheres. The branch in front of it is 122 and 27 of woodworking nodes you would buy anyway.

Raising the stall is 4 Building Kit I, 3 Wooden Kit I and 1 Iron Kit I, the cheapest band in town, and it pays 2 village reputation like every other shop. The upgrades are where it turns awkward, because they want the stand’s own produce back.

What each tier costs to build

14 Building Kit I, 3 Wooden Kit I, 1 Iron Kit I208
24 Furniture Kit I, 2 Glass Containers, 40 Cabbage II5016
34 Furniture Kit II, 3 Building Kit II, 40 Onion III10025

Forty Cabbage III-grade cabbages and then forty Onion III is the real gate. A farm growing only the basics cannot upgrade this shop at all, which is the same lesson its happiness table teaches from the other direction.

His standing order is a supply crate of vegetables and then preserves, paying 30, 40 and 50 happiness as he grows, and Supply: Vegetables accepts several different crops at quantities that fall as the grade rises. Those sit with the rest on town orders.

Questions about the Vegetable Stand in Graveyard Keeper 2

Where do you buy a shovel in Graveyard Keeper 2?

The Vegetable Stand, and nowhere else. It carries a Bronze Shovel at its first tier for 160, an Iron Shovel at its second for 1,750 and a Steel Shovel at its third for 14,500. No shop in the game sells an axe or a pickaxe at all.

Why is my wheat worth less happiness than it used to be?

Because you upgraded the stand. The batch it wants for two smiles rises with each tier while the smiles do not, so Cabbage I goes from ten a smile to thirty at the first upgrade. Graded crops are the way back.

What is the best crop to give him?

Pumpkin III at his third tier, at five a smile, which is twice as good as Cabbage I ever was. Onion III is ten. The basic crops all settle at 25 a smile once he is fully upgraded.

How do you unlock the Vegetable Stand?

Market Stalls I, which is hidden until the story reveals it and then handed over free. It also opens the Apothecary and the Tailor. The stall itself is 4 Building Kit I, 3 Wooden Kit I and 1 Iron Kit I.

Why can I not upgrade it?

The second tier wants 40 Cabbage II and the third wants 40 Onion III, so the stand cannot be upgraded by a farm that only grows the basic grade. Improve the garden first.

Does he buy shovels back?

Not the grade he is currently selling. The Smithy buys every worn tool instead, and pays exactly the base price for it whatever he already holds.
