Herbert

Updated 3 min read

Herbert is the head of the guards, and his one reputation lock is not the combat lock you would expect: it opens Reinforced Plank and Bronze Equipment, and the plank is the half that matters most. Assembly bench I and Smithy I are six Reinforced Plank each, so Herbert sits upstream of the Factory as surely as Jack does. One of them sells you the machines and the other sells you the wood they stand on.

One lock at twenty, and two things behind it

What twenty reputation with Herbert opens

Reinforced Plank45 redSix of them per Assembly bench I and per Smithy I
Bronze Equipment30 redThe first real weapons and armor for your squads

Twenty is two quests, and his early ones arrive on their own, so this is one of the gentler locks in the game. It is worth clearing before you go looking at the Factory, because you will need the planks either way.

The graveyard is his morale problem

His first real request has nothing to do with weapons. The guards are losing, and what he wants is for the dead to be buried properly, which makes your graveyard rating a military statistic.

All we’ve been doing is retreating… and losing faith.

Seems there’s nowhere left to retreat… and no faith left to lose.

And everybody’s just… kinda okay with it.

Herbert, on the state of the guard

Improving the graveyard is what turns that around, and the conversation ends with him asking where you intend to find enough Faith to fight back. He also quotes books mid-conversation and is slightly embarrassed about it, which is how the reading questline starts and how he ends up connected to Agatha.

The NPC layer is one chain

Agatha sends the corpses. The graveyard those corpses fill is what lifts Herbert’s guards. Herbert’s reputation opens the planks, and Jack’s opens the machines that stand on them.

None of that is signposted in game, and each link is a different system, which is why it is easy to play for hours without noticing that the people are the progression.

How to raise it

Ten at a time, from fifteen quests, and he has no shop at any tier. His line runs from a burial certificate in the opening hours to holding the town during the elections and, at the end, helping restore the portal alongside Agatha.

The combat half of his line leans on barricades and towers, which is the page for how those fights are won. Bronze Equipment is the gear his guards and your squads carry into them.

Questions about Herbert in Graveyard Keeper 2

What does Herbert reputation unlock?

One lock at 20, opening Reinforced Plank at 45 red and Bronze Equipment at 30 red. The plank matters most, because Assembly bench I and Smithy I need six of them each.

Where is Herbert?

The Barracks for most of the game, and the Crossroads with Agatha by the end of it.

How do you raise reputation with Herbert?

Quests, ten at a time, fifteen of them. He has no shop at any tier, so there is nothing to buy your way up with.

Why does he care about the graveyard?

Because it is his morale problem. The guards have been retreating and losing faith, and burying the dead properly is what turns that around, which makes your graveyard rating a military statistic.

Does Herbert sell anything?

No. Like Agatha, Albert and Jack, he is a quest character rather than a trader.
