Nineteen of the Apothecary’s lines are called Alchemic Powder, which is why his counter reads as a wall of the same item. They are not the same item. Each one is a bundle of runes, and the sprites printed in its name are exactly what it carries.
That makes him the shop that sells alchemy. Every formula in the game is a rune target, and his powders are the only ingredients whose rune content is written on the label rather than learned.
The powders are runes, and the price is not linear
Twenty one powders exist. Nine carry one or two runes and cost five a rune, and the twelve that carry three cost more per rune the more colors they mix.
| One of any color | 3 | 5 | 5 |
| Two, any mix | 6 | 10 | 5 |
| Three of one color | 3 | 20 | 6.7 |
| Three as a pair plus one | 6 | 25 | 8.3 |
| Three, one of each color | 1 | 30 | 10 |

A mix takes two items at Laboratory I and three at the upgrades, one item per slot, and a stack does not help. So a formula wanting nine runes needs three slots each carrying three.
That is the whole reason a three rune powder costs more per rune than a single. You are paying for the room it saves, and above six runes there is no cheaper way to do it.
It also means his first tier cannot reach the expensive formulas at all. ![]()

What a formula asks for
A formula is a rune total and nothing more, so anything that adds up works. The game holds an explicit list of every valid combination rather than working it out, which is why the same potion can be made a dozen ways and why guides disagree about the recipe.
| Healing Potion | 2 red | One Stone on its own | 13 |
| Dream Dust | 1 green, 1 blue | Seed oil and a Stick | 23 |
| Third Eye Salt | 1 red, 5 blue | Clay, Minced Meat and a three blue powder | 170 |
| Philosopher Stone | 3 red, 3 green, 3 blue | Marble, Alcohol and a Pumpkin | 432 |

He is one of the first three shops, and the branch is free
Market Stalls I is not bought. It is hidden until the story reveals it and then handed over outright, which makes the Apothecary, the Vegetable Stand and the Tailor the only shops that cost no spheres to unlock.

Questions about the Apothecary in Graveyard Keeper 2
What are the Alchemic Powders for?
They are runes. Every alchemy formula is a rune target, and a powder carries between one and three runes of the colors printed in its name. They are the only ingredient whose rune content you can read without studying it first.
Which powder is the best value?
The one and two rune powders, at five coins a rune. The three rune ones run from 6.7 to 10 a rune, but they are the only way to reach a formula wanting more than six runes, because the bench has two ingredient slots at Laboratory I and three after that.
Why can I not buy a three rune powder?
His first tier does not stock any. All twelve arrive when the Apothecary is upgraded once, for 4 Furniture Kit I, 1 Sculpture Kit I and 2 Glass Containers.
How do you unlock the Apothecary?
Market Stalls I, which is hidden until the story reveals it and then granted free. It also opens the Vegetable Stand and the Tailor. Raising the stall costs 4 Building Kit I, 3 Wooden Kit I and 1 Iron Kit I.
Is there a cheaper way to make a Healing Potion?
One Stone. It carries two red runes and the potion asks for two red runes, so a rock off the ground is a whole potion. Thirteen combinations make it in total.
Should I buy his candles?
While your beehives are young, yes. A Simple Candle is 100 coins and beeswax makes the same candle once the hives are producing, so his are a stopgap rather than a supply.
