The Factory

Updated 8 min read

The Factory is the one building in Graveyard Keeper 2 you never build: an abandoned Inquisitor factory sitting under your own base, already assembled and buried, which you reach by breaking into it. No journal entry ever mentions it and the quest that tracks it is hidden, so plenty of players open it by accident and never work out what they have found. It has two locks that have nothing to do with each other, a pile of debris and a man called Jack, and being through one tells you nothing about the other.

The Factory is the one building in Graveyard Keeper 2 you never build. It is an abandoned Inquisitor factory sitting under your own base, already assembled and buried, and the game hands it to you by letting you break into it.

That is also why it is so easy to miss. No journal entry ever mentions it, nothing on the map points at it, and the quest that tracks it is hidden and completes the moment you walk in. Plenty of players open it by accident and never work out what they have found.

It has two locks that have nothing to do with each other. One is a pile of debris, the other is a man called Jack, and being through one tells you nothing about the other. You can stand in an empty Factory for hours of play before you are allowed to build a single machine in it.

Finding it: five blockages, and any one will do

The room sits in the dungeon network under your house, the same tunnels the Plague Doctor walks you into early on. He is the one who notices it, and he does it in dialogue rather than in your quest log.

Do you hear that sound behind this debris? Some kind of clinking.

That echo… there’s a space behind this. A big space.

Metal, gears… sounds like a machine graveyard.

The Plague Doctor, at the debris

Five separate blockages open the way, and **you only need one of them**. The game runs a hidden clean-up quest for each, and whichever you clear first completes the chain and cancels the other four.

The mineThe blockage into the mineThe same one the zombie technologies need
You may have opened it already

The mine blockage on that list is the same one that reveals Zombie Mining and the rest of the zombie gathering branch. Anyone who chased a Zombie Miner early has almost certainly opened the Factory too and never been told.

If the Plague Doctor has ever said “I told you clearing that debris would be worth it”, that was this.

Clearing it also lights the place up and switches on the seven resource containers down there, marble, stone, wood, clay, sand, coal and iron ore, which are what the belts eventually feed from. The same tunnels run on towards the forest mine.

Jack is the real gate, and he does not take spheres

Standing in the Factory does not let you build anything in it. Every machine hangs off the Conveyors technology, and Conveyors hangs off a node that costs no spheres at all and asks for 50 reputation with Jack.

That is the wall people hit. No amount of technology points opens it, and nothing on the node explains that the answer is a person.

Counting every ancestor, reaching that first bench is 327 red, 37 green and 60 blue. Jack gates the Building line three separate times, at 40 reputation, at 50 and again at 70 over in Metallurgy, so he is worth keeping happy well before you want a Factory.

Power is gears, and one tile too many stops everything

The Factory runs on a single number the game calls gears, shown at the top of the zone. Everything you place spends it and only docked zombies produce it.

Gears limit your Factory’s capacity. Operate more Carousels to increase it.

Tutorial: Factory

What makes power and what spends it

Zombie Carousel, per docked zombieGives 7, or 10 with Belt Master
Zombie source, per docked zombieGives 5
A conveyor belt tileCosts 1
An underground belt tileCosts 1
A station tileCosts 1
A splitterCosts 1
Going one tile over stops the whole floor

There is no partial running and no warning. Place one belt tile more than your gears support and the belts stop, and every conveyor crafter zombie stops with them.

More Zombie Carousel capacity is the only fix, which means more zombies standing on carousels rather than doing anything else.

What you can build down there

Everything is built from the Factory build desk, and almost everything is priced in Bronze Gears. A Conveyor Belt tile is one Bronze Gear and one Fabric, which is the cheap part; the machines are where the cost sits.

The Factory build list

Assembly bench I6 Reinforced Plank, 4 Bronze Gear, 4 Bronze DetailMakes town supplies, 3 of them
Assembly bench II6 Reinforced Beam, 8 Bronze Gear, 6 Advanced DetailRaises that to 10 supplies
Assembly bench III6 Wooden Joint, 12 Steel Screws, 4 Engineering DetailsRaises it to 15
Smithy I6 Reinforced Plank, 4 Bronze Detail, 4 Bronze GearIron, brick, glass and tableware on coal
Bioreactor10 Glass, 8 Bronze Gear, 6 Advanced DetailZombie Power from Wheat
Zombie Carousel6 Bronze Gear, 6 Iron Detail, 4 Wooden beamThe power source
Zombie Supply Porter4 Wooden Plank, 8 Iron Nails, 2 Iron DetailMoves finished supplies out
Conveyor Belt1 Bronze Gear, 1 FabricOne tile of belt
Supply Station4 Bronze Gear, 6 Iron Detail, 2 Wooden beamWhere a supply leaves the line

The bench tier is not a speed upgrade, it is a catalogue. Assembly bench I can make three of the town supplies, the second ten and the third fifteen, so a supply you cannot find is usually a bench tier rather than a missing recipe. The Smithy I is the one that pays for itself earliest, because it turns one ore and one coal into an ingot on the same eight second rhythm a Zombie Miner produces on.

Every station down there needs a zombie

Factory workstations need zombies to work, and must be linked by conveyor belts.

Tutorial: Factory

Nothing in the Factory runs itself. Each bench needs a zombie standing at it, each carousel needs one to turn it, and the belts only carry what a station hands them. A Factory is a staffing problem before it is an engineering one.

The Zombie Supply Porter is what gets finished supplies out to the town, and it arrives with the Zombie Delivery technology at 110 red and 10 blue. Without something clearing outputs a bench stops after one craft, which is the usual reason a line looks built and does nothing. The rest of the reasons are on why a worker stops.

Where would I find someone willing to turn it down here underground?

Well, for example… maybe you can use some of those undead fellows wandering around our yard.

The Plague Doctor, on staffing the Factory

What the Factory is for

The Factory allows you to fully automate town supplies, including both production and delivery.

Tutorial: Factory

That is the whole point of it. town supplies and town orders are the two systems it exists to take off your hands, and 68 of the 77 town orders can only be produced by a conveyor bench in the first place.

So the Factory is not an optional automation toy bolted onto the late game. It is where most of the town order list is made, and the Bioreactor feeding Zombie Power into the mechanism chain is part of the same floor.

Questions about the Factory in Graveyard Keeper 2

Where is the Factory in Graveyard Keeper 2?

Underground, in the dungeon network beneath your own base. It is an abandoned Inquisitor factory rather than something you build, and you reach it by clearing debris in the tunnels under your house.

How do you unlock the Factory?

By clearing any one of five blockages: either pile in the home basement, the vineyard basement, the well, or the mine. They all lead to the same place, and clearing one cancels the need for the rest.

Is there a quest for the Factory?

There is one, but it never appears in your journal. It is a hidden quest that completes the moment you enter the zone, and what you see instead is the Plague Doctor commenting on the debris and on what is behind it.

Why can I not build anything in the Factory?

Because the machines are gated by Jack, not by the room. The Conveyors technology sits behind a node that costs no spheres and requires 50 reputation with him, so being in the Factory and being allowed to use it are two different things.

How much does the Factory cost in technology points?

Reaching the first assembly bench is 327 red, 37 green and 60 blue counting every ancestor node, plus the Jack reputation lock which costs nothing but cannot be bought.

What are gears in the Factory?

The power budget. Each zombie docked on a Zombie Carousel gives 7, or 10 with Belt Master, and a zombie source gives 5. Every belt tile, underground tile, station tile and splitter costs 1.

Why did my conveyor belts stop working?

You are over your gear budget. There is no partial running: one tile too many stops the belts and every conveyor crafter zombie with them. Add a Carousel and a zombie to turn it.

Which assembly bench do I need?

It decides how many town supplies you can make at all. The first bench covers three, the second ten and the third fifteen, so a supply missing from the list usually means the bench tier rather than a missing recipe.

Do Factory benches work without zombies?

No. Every workstation needs a zombie standing at it and the carousels need zombies to turn them, so the Factory is a staffing problem first. A bench also stops after one craft unless a Zombie Supply Porter is clearing its output.
