Dream Dust

Updated 7 min read

Dream Dust is the wall almost everyone hits in the first few hours of Graveyard Keeper 2, and the answer is a single ingredient. One Ash in the Laboratory on its own makes it, and one Peat does the same for nothing, because both carry the compound of one green and one blue rune the formula asks for. The reason it feels impossible is that the game hides an ingredient's runes until you have studied it, so you can be carrying the solution with no way to know. It is worth solving quickly, because handing the dust to the Plague Doctor is what opens the hatch to the resurrection table and your first two zombies.

Put one Ash in the Laboratory on its own and press Craft. That is the whole recipe for Dream Dust, and one Peat does the same job for nothing.

The reason this is the most common wall in the early game is that the Laboratory never shows you a recipe. It shows you a compound, one green and one blue, and leaves you to work out which ingredient carries that.

It matters more than an ordinary crafting puzzle because Dream Dust is the gate to the entire zombie system. Until you hand one over, the second half of Graveyard Keeper 2 stays shut.

Why the game never tells you the recipe

Alchemy in this game is not a recipe list. Every formula is written as a rune compound, Dream Dust being one green and one blue, and every ingredient carries its own runes that add together in the pot.

The catch is that an ingredient does not show its runes until you have studied it. You can be holding the answer in your bag and have no way of knowing, which is exactly what makes this feel unsolvable rather than difficult.

Study Ash and the window tells you plainly: compound, one green and one blue. That is the Dream Dust formula exactly, with nothing else needed alongside it.

Study your ingredients before you try to guess

The study table turns every unknown ingredient into a readable compound, and it pays technology points for doing it. Once a handful are studied the alchemy system stops being a lottery, because you can read the runes off the things you already carry.

Every Dream Dust recipe

Twenty-three combinations make Dream Dust, and three of them are a single ingredient. Ash and Peat both carry one green and one blue on their own, and so does an Alchemic Powder mixed for those two runes.

The other twenty are pairs, and nine of those cost nothing at all. Berry with Blood, Blueberry with Water, Leaf with Seed oil and Water with Seed oil all work, because each of those carries exactly one of the two runes you need.

A Stick paired with Blood or Blueberry costs a single coin and is the answer if you are standing in the woods with nothing else. There is no quality difference between any of them, so use whatever is nearest.

Getting the Laboratory in the first place

The technology that unlocks both Dream Dust and the Laboratory is Alchemy, Basic, and it costs no spheres at all. What it costs instead is standing: the node stays locked until you reach ten reputation with the Plague Doctor.

That is the loop that traps people. The man who wants the Dream Dust is the same man whose good opinion unlocks the means to make it, so the answer is always to do his earlier errands first rather than to hunt for a recipe.

Laboratory I then costs four Wooden Plank, three Bronze Detail and three Glass. Stand at it and the prompt reads Mix rather than Craft, which is the tell that this station wants runes instead of a recipe.

Where Ash and Peat come from

Ash comes out of the Crematorium, which means anyone who has been burning bodies rather than burying them already has a stack of it. It is the fastest answer for most players because the supply is a by-product of something you were doing anyway.

Peat is the free route. Eight Leaf at a Compost Pile makes two Peat in three seconds, and the second tier turns sixteen Leaf into five, so a single afternoon of raking gives you more Dream Dust than the game will ever ask for.

If you would rather not mix anything, the town alchemist sells Dream Dust outright, five at the first shop tier and ten thereafter. That is the slowest and most expensive answer and it exists mainly as a safety net.

Handing it over is what unlocks zombies

Sweet Dreams asks you to bring the Dream Dust to the Plague Doctor in the Abandoned Tower. Walk it down to him and the only dialogue option is to check the dust, a quiet ending for the most important errand in the early game.

Completing it pays ten Plague Doctor reputation, a Story and a change of clothes, and then opens the hatch in the Alchemy Lab. The next instruction is to follow Albert through it.

What waits at the bottom is the resurrection table, the zombie tutorial and two zombies of your own. Everything the game later builds on zombie work, the workshops, the farms and the conveyors, runs through this one delivery.

What else Dream Dust is for

Three recipes want it after the quest is done, so it is worth keeping a couple in the bag. Crop Boosting Fertilizer I takes two Peat and one Dream Dust at the Formulation Bench, which is a neat trick given Peat is also the cheapest way to make the dust.

Fancy Incense is one Melted Fat, one Fragrance and one Dream Dust at the same bench. Summon Fairy wants one Dream Dust, one Comet’s Tail and one Tooth at a kitchen table, and belongs to a quest rather than to everyday crafting.

Graveyard Keeper 2 Dream Dust FAQ

What is the easiest Dream Dust recipe in Graveyard Keeper 2?

One Ash on its own, or one Peat on its own. Both carry a compound of one green and one blue rune, which is exactly what the formula asks for, so the second ingredient slot stays empty. Twenty more pairs work as well, nine of which cost nothing.

Why can I not see what my ingredients do?

Because an ingredient hides its runes until you study it. Take it to the study table and the result window prints its compound, which is the number the Laboratory is asking you to match. Study a handful early and alchemy stops being guesswork.

Where do I get Ash?

The Crematorium produces it when you burn a body, so it accumulates on its own if you are cremating rather than burying. It is also cheap to buy at ten coins.

Where do I get Peat?

Eight Leaf at a Compost Pile makes two Peat in three seconds, and the second tier turns sixteen Leaf into five. Leaf costs nothing and is everywhere, which makes Peat the cheapest Dream Dust in the game.

Why can I not build the Laboratory?

Alchemy, Basic is the technology that unlocks it and it is locked behind ten reputation with the Plague Doctor rather than behind spheres. Do his earlier errands and the node opens for free. The Laboratory itself is four Wooden Plank, three Bronze Detail and three Glass.

What does handing over the Dream Dust unlock?

Zombies. Finishing Sweet Dreams pays ten Plague Doctor reputation, a Story and a change of clothes, then opens the hatch in the Alchemy Lab. Following Albert down leads to the resurrection table, the zombie tutorial and your first two zombies.

Can I just buy Dream Dust?

Yes, the town alchemist stocks it, five at the first shop tier and ten after that. It is the slowest and priciest route and exists mainly as a safety net if you are stuck.
