The loose rocks scattered around the world are not the only source of Stone, and they are not the one to build a run around. There is a stone face set into a wall that puts itself back together the moment you break it, so it can be mined forever.
It is worth knowing what you give up for that, because the renewable face is not strictly better than a loose rock. It pays half the research and none of the inspiration.
The face in the wall never runs out
Ordinary rocks are finite in the sense that matters: you break them, they are gone, and they come back on the world’s own schedule. The face in the wall is different. It is replaced with a fresh copy of itself the instant it breaks, so the only limit on it is your stamina.
Four swings take it down and it drops four Stone, at two energy a swing. It wants Building mastery of four to work at all, which is a little higher than most of the scenery, so it is not a first hour resource.
The face is one of eight things in the game that replace themselves when destroyed. The others are the copper veins, the sand pits, the clay spots, the marble face and the garden well, which is why those five are the resources you never have to ration.
Everything else that yields materials is scenery. Scenery comes back, but on a timer and in its own time, which is covered on resource respawning.
| Garden well | 20 Water | 3 | 0 | 1 | 0 |
| Clay spot | 4 Clay | 3 | 2 | 2 | 0 |
| Copper vein | 3 Copper Nugget, and two chances at a Gem | 5 | 2 | 1 | 2 |
| Sand pit | 4 Sand | 4 | 3 | 1 | 1 |
| Stone face | 4 Stone | 4 | 4 | 2 | 1 |
| Marble face | 4 Marble | 4 | 7 | 2 | 2 |

It is worse than a rock in two ways
Set the renewable face against the best of the loose rocks and the four Stone are identical. The face takes one swing fewer, which is a real saving in energy over a morning, and then the comparison turns.
| Stone face in the wall | 4 | 4 | 4 | 1 | None |
| Large rock | 4 | 5 | 4 | 2 | Yes |
| Medium rock | 3 | 5 | 3 | 2 | Yes |
| Small rock | 2 | 5 | 2 | 2 | Yes |
| Rubble | 1 | 5 | 1 | 2 | Yes |
Breaking a loose rock pays two red spheres and the face pays one, so clearing scenery is worth twice as much research for the same material. The face also counts for nothing toward the Rock Breaker inspiration, which every loose rock advances.
While there are rocks standing, break rocks. They pay double the research, they feed an inspiration the face does not, and they are in your way.
Once the ground is clear, the face is the answer and there is no reason to go looking further afield. That is the order Phillip arrived at in play, and the numbers agree with it.

You do not have to swing at it yourself
The same wall takes a zombie worker. The stations there hold fifty units of output, which is a long time between collections, and a worker on one turns an infinite source into a passive one.
That combination is the reason the face matters beyond the early game. A finite rock staffed by a zombie stops when the rock does; a face that rebuilds itself does not stop at all.
What the Stone is for
Stone is a base material rather than a finished one, and almost everything it feeds is a building. The first step is usually ![]()

Questions about Stone in Graveyard Keeper 2
Where do I find infinite stone?
A stone face set into a wall, which rebuilds itself the moment you break it. It takes four swings, drops four Stone and needs Building mastery of four, and it is the answer once the loose rocks around the world are gone.
Do rocks come back?
Loose scenery rocks respawn on the world timer. The face in the wall does not wait for that at all, because it is replaced with a fresh copy of itself immediately.
Is the infinite face better than breaking rocks?
Not entirely. It is one swing cheaper for the same four Stone, but it pays one red sphere where a rock pays two, and it gives no Rock Breaker inspiration. Clear the scenery first and settle at the wall afterwards.
What else in the game never runs out?
Seven other faces: the copper veins, two sand pits, two clay spots, the marble face and the garden well. Everything else that yields material is scenery on a respawn timer.
Can a zombie mine the infinite stone?
Yes. The wall carries stations that accept a worker and hold fifty units of output, which turns the one source in the game that cannot be exhausted into a passive one.
What mastery do I need to mine it?
Building mastery of four for stone, and seven for the marble face next to it. A pickaxe is what the game makes you carry, though a pickaxe feeds the Building track itself.
