Crematorium I

Updated 4 min read

The Crematorium burns a body and gives you Ash and Salt back, and it is the only building in Graveyard Keeper 2 that does. It costs six Brick and six Bronze Detail and it is built from the Morgue desk rather than the Yard, which is the detail most players get wrong. A burn takes no ingredients beyond the corpse itself, returns five Ash and one Salt, and pays technology points on top. The upgrade looks thin if you only read the outputs, because five Ash becomes seven. The number that moves is the duration, which drops from eight to five, and that makes Crematorium II worth about 2.2 times the first one rather than the 1.4 the output line suggests.

The Crematorium burns a body and gives you Ash and Salt back. It is the only building that does, it takes no ingredients beyond the corpse itself, and it is the cheapest way to turn the bodies you cannot bury into something the alchemy bench wants.

Six Brick and six Bronze Detail, at the Morgue desk

Crematorium I costs six Brick and six Bronze Detail, and it is built from the Morgue desk rather than the Yard. That is the part people get wrong: the Morgue has its own build menu and the Crematorium is not offered anywhere else.

Both halves of the bill are mid game rather than early. The brick wants a Kiln running and the bronze detail wants an anvil, so the Crematorium usually arrives well after the bodies start piling up rather than in time to prevent it.

One burn, five Ash and a Salt

A burn at Crematorium I returns five Ash and one Salt, takes eight to run, and pays 1 and 2 on top. It sits on the Anatomy track at lock one, which means it never fails and any zombie can be left on it.

The recipe takes no listed ingredients at all. The corpse on the slab is the entire input, which is what makes the Crematorium the answer to a full Morgue rather than a production building you feed.

The Cremator perk doubles both outputs

Both the Ash and the Salt carry a plus one per rank of Cremator, on a base of five and one. At the first rank that is ten Ash and two Salt from the same body and the same eight duration.

Nothing else in the game moves the yield, so the perk is the whole of your Ash economy once the building is up.

Crematorium II is a speed upgrade wearing a yield upgrade’s clothes

The upgrade costs twelve Brick and eight Advanced Detail, which is double the brick and a considerably dearer metal. Read only the outputs and it looks thin: five Ash becomes seven, one Salt becomes two.

The number that moves is the duration, and it drops from eight to five. Five Ash per eight is 0.63 a tick; seven Ash per five is 1.4. The second Crematorium produces Ash at 2.2 times the rate of the first, not the 1.4 times the output line suggests.

That changes when to buy it. If bodies are arriving faster than you can burn them, the upgrade clears the backlog at more than twice the speed and is worth the Advanced Detail. If you are only cremating the occasional refusal, the first Crematorium is enough and the metal is better spent elsewhere.

Graveyard Keeper 2 Crematorium FAQ

How do you build the Crematorium in Graveyard Keeper 2?

Six Brick and six Bronze Detail, from the Morgue build desk. It is not offered at the Yard desk, which is where most players look first.

What does the Crematorium give you?

Five Ash and one Salt per body at tier I, and seven Ash and two Salt at tier II. The corpse is the only input; there is nothing else to feed it.

How long does a cremation take?

Eight at Crematorium I and five at Crematorium II. It also pays 1 red and 2 blue technology points each time.

Is Crematorium II worth it?

If you have a backlog, yes. The outputs only rise from five Ash to seven, but the duration drops from eight to five, so the real throughput is about 2.2 times tier I rather than 1.4 times.

What does Crematorium II cost?

Twelve Brick and eight Advanced Detail, which is double the brick of tier I and a step up in metal.

Does any perk improve cremation?

Cremator, and it is the only one. It adds one Ash and one Salt per rank on a base of five and one, so the first rank alone doubles a tier I burn.

Can a zombie run the Crematorium?

Yes. The burn sits on the Anatomy track at lock one, so it never fails and any worker can be left on it.

Where is the Crematorium built?

In the Morgue, from the Morgue’s own build desk. The Morgue holds fifteen buildings in total, including both Autopsy Tables and both Embalming Tables.
