Hall of Thanes Quests: All 5 WoW Forever Quests, Locations and Rewards

World of Warcraft: Forever has added a brand-new dungeon underneath Ironforge, and the Hall of Thanes is already one of the busiest spots in the beta. It's a level 13 to 18 Alliance dungeon hidden down in Old Ironforge, reached through a cobwebbed corridor off the Great Forge and a bridge over open lava. Inside, the Dark Iron dwarves have broken into the ancient dwarven tombs, and four bosses stand between you and the lower vaults, ending with Durgen Dirgehammer. There are 5 quests to pick up, and three of them need to be in your log before you zone in, including Old Ironforge Incursion, which starts all the way out in Dun Morogh. The other two start inside the dungeon. Do all five and you'll walk out with four blue rewards, 38 silver and around 6,000 XP. Below is where every quest starts, what it asks for and which boss finishes it.

The Hall of Thanes has five quests in WoW Forever, and three of them should be in your log before you zone in: The Restless Dead from Afadra Dunwall, Important Heirlooms from Thom Filch, and Old Ironforge Incursion, the end of a four-quest chain from Earthseer Farsen out in Dun Morogh. The other two, An Ancient Grudge and The Treaty of Understanding, start inside the dungeon. After you finish all five, you’ll walk out with four blue rewards, 38 silver, and around 6,000 quest XP.

The Dungeon is in an all-new area under Ironforge, as part of World of Warcraft’s Forever Beta

The Hall of Thanes is the new level 13 to 18 Alliance dungeon underneath Ironforge, the Alliance’s answer to Ragefire Chasm. You can pick up every quest here at level 9 or 10, and most are shareable, so it’s easy to get the whole group on the same quests before the first pull. Kill XP inside the dungeon has been cut right back in Forever, so the quests are where the XP is, and skipping them makes the run much less worth it.

Where the Hall of Thanes entrance is

The entrance is inside Ironforge, under the city in Old Ironforge, around 43.5, 52.0. Stand in the Great Forge facing the High Seat (Magni’s throne room), and take the cobweb-covered corridor on your left that leads down. Follow the stairs and the crumbling path toward the lava; the portal is at the end of the bridge. You can pick up quests near the entrance or up the stairs.

Don’t fall into the lava under the bridge

The approach bridge runs over open lava, and beta players who slipped off it got stuck down there and had to die and corpse-run back. Take the bridge slowly, especially if you’re on a mount.

The three quests to pick up before you go in

The Restless Dead comes from Afadra Dunwall, the Lorekeeper of Ironforge, who stands up the stairs past the corridor under the High Seat, above the dungeon entrance. She hears noises from the tombs and wants the spirits put back to sleep, which means killing 15 Enraged Apparitions and 10 Tormented Souls. Both are trash mobs you’ll clear along the way, and you hand it back to Afadra afterward.

Important Heirlooms come from Thom Filch, who’s waiting by the bridge outside the dungeon. He’s very obviously a thief who calls himself a patroller, and he wants 8 Dwarven Heirlooms from the burial urns and chests inside. You’ll see players racing to grab heirlooms off the tables near the start, but don’t worry if you miss a few, as the locked vaults in the last room hold about 24 more. It’s the only quest here that gives Gadgetzan reputation instead of Ironforge, which fits his story.

I was sneaking–uh… ‘patrolling’ in the vaults when a force of Dark Iron dwarves emerged from the depths in mole machines! I don’t know what they are here for, but there is priceless loot–uh or, rather… I mean, ‘important cultural heirlooms’ down there!

Thom Filch, Important Heirlooms

Old Ironforge Incursion is the one people miss, because it doesn’t start anywhere near the dungeon. Earthseer Farsen gives it at his camp on the hill above Gol’Bolar Quarry in Dun Morogh, but only after you’ve brought him the Dark Iron Map from Ironband’s Compound, so do that chain before you queue. Our Old Ironforge Incursion guide covers every step and the reward choice.

Two quests start inside the dungeon

An Ancient Grudge comes from a Ghostly Attendant just past the first room, in the west wing. The spirit asks you to put its Thane to rest, and that Thane is Faldrim Anvilmar, the first boss, who patrols his tomb in the large central area off the west wing. Kill him, and the quest completes. It pays no money or reputation, but the Catacomb CloakCatacomb CloakBinds when picked upBack17 Armor+3 Stamina+6 Attack PowerEquip: +4 Attack Power against Humanoids.Sell Price: 346Not BiS at level 30: Grimsteel Cape is better for tanks and Deepgrave TrousersDeepgrave TrousersBinds when picked upLegsLeather70 Armor+7 Strength+3 Agility+3 SpiritDurability 60 / 60Sell Price: 579Not BiS at level 30: Triprunner Dungarees is better for agility melee and Hunters are both blue.

Ghostly Attendant, An Ancient Grudge

The Treaty of Understanding starts from a stone tablet behind the vault door on the right side of the final room, where you fight Durgen Dirgehammer. It’s an accept and hand in for extra XP. It records the peace treaty between the Bronzebeard and Wildhammer clans after the War of the Three Hammers, and Magni wants it. Loot it before you leave, since it’s easy to walk past on the way to the exit lever.

This tablet bears the personal sigils of Madoran Bronzebeard and Khardros Wildhammer. There is space for a third sigil here, but it is conspicuously absent.

Item: Treaty of Understanding

Which boss finishes which quest

The dungeon has four bosses. Two are quest targets, and the Heirlooms and Restless Dead objectives fill up as you clear the rooms between them. The order below is the usual route, though the beta doesn’t force it, so your group might meet them in a different order.

BossQuestBoss loot
Faldrim AnvilmarAn Ancient GrudgeEphemeral Choker, Aetherwisp Bracers, Spiritwraith Drape
MagmatusKindlegem Girdle, Flamefist Grips, Fang of Magmatus
PlunderGolemheart Stave, Golemguard Chest, Treads of the Protector Golem
Durgen DirgehammerOld Ironforge Incursion (drops his head)Direhammer Leggings, Durgen’s Crescent Axe, Robes of the Disgraced Thane

Boss loot is all item level 18 blue and requires level 13.

How to beat each Hall of Thanes boss

None of the four fights is hard on its own. What catches groups out is the trash, especially the Dark Iron packs in the second half, so the notes below cover both.

BossWatch out for
Faldrim AnvilmarA curse that slows attacks and can turn his target to stone
MagmatusKill the Dark Iron Summoner first, then Fire Nova
PlunderStunning charge and a knockback; tank him by the tunnel
Durgen DirgehammerTwo stone golems, and a group fear at low health

Faldrim Anvilmar

Faldrim Anvilmar loot in the Hall of Thanes: Ephemeral Choker, Aetherwisp Bracers and Spiritwraith Drape

Faldrim is the Thane the Ghostly Attendant asks you to put to rest, so killing him completes An Ancient Grudge. He’s in his tomb off the west wing, and the fight is easiest if you clear the room around him before you pull. His one real mechanic is a curse that slows his target’s attacks and can turn them to stone, so a Mage or Druid who can remove curses makes him a pushover. Magmatus

Magmatus loot in the Hall of Thanes: Fang of Magmatus, Kindlegem Girdle and Flamefist Grips

Magmatus is a fire elemental the invading Dark Iron dwarves bring with them, and a Dark Iron Summoner fights beside him. Kill the summoner first, because it keeps calling in adds for as long as it’s alive, then turn on Magmatus. He casts Fire Nova and puts a burn on the group, so a melee-heavy party takes a lot of area damage and your healer should be ready for it. He doesn’t have much health and drops fast once the adds stop.

The Dark Iron tunnel is the hardest part

The packs in the tunnel after Magmatus are the toughest in the dungeon. Dark Iron Summoners call in more adds and throw hard-hitting fireballs, and the engineers lob grenades that hit everyone nearby. Focus one target at a time, crowd control one enemy per pull if you can, and spread out so the grenades only catch one or two people. You can also shoot the barrels along the way for extra damage.

Plunder

Plunder loot in the Hall of Thanes: Golemguard Chest, Golemheart Stave and Treads of the Protector Golem

Plunder is a war golem with a charge that stuns and a knockback that punts people across the room. The fight is a tank and spank, but if someone lands next to another pack you’ve suddenly got two fights at once. Clear the enemies closest to him first, then tank him by the tunnel so the knockback throws people into empty space. Durgen Dirgehammer

Durgen Dirgehammer loot in the Hall of Thanes: Direhammer Leggings, Durgen's Crescent Axe and Robes of the Disgraced Thane

Durgen waits in the circular vault room at the end with two Lesser Stone Golems, and his head is the item Old Ironforge Incursion asks for, so make sure everyone on the quest loots it. It’s mostly a straight fight, but when his health gets low he fears the whole group. Either clear the room before you pull so nobody runs into more enemies, or bring a way to break it, like a Priest‘s Fear Ward or a Warrior’s Berserker Rage.

Once he’s dead, open the locked vaults around the room for the extra Dwarven Heirlooms, pick up the Treaty of Understanding on the right, and double check you’ve looted every quest item before you leave. A lever in the room opens a shortcut back towards the entrance.

Horde players have their own new dungeon in the same level range, the Ruins of Lordaeron, and the WoW Forever tier list shows which classes handle these early dungeons best.

Hall of Thanes quests FAQ

How many quests are in the Hall of Thanes?

There are five: The Restless Dead, Important Heirlooms, An Ancient Grudge, Old Ironforge Incursion, and The Treaty of Understanding. You pick up three outside, and two start inside the dungeon from the Ghostly Attendant and the vault tablet.

Who are the Hall of Thanes bosses?

There are four: Faldrim Anvilmar, Magmatus, Plunder and Durgen Dirgehammer. Faldrim finishes An Ancient Grudge and Durgen drops the head for Old Ironforge Incursion, while Magmatus and Plunder are there for their loot. The hardest part of the run is the Dark Iron trash between Magmatus and Plunder.

Where do you get Old Ironforge Incursion?

Earthseer Farsen gives it from his camp on the hill overlooking Gol’Bolar Quarry in Dun Morogh, around 64.8, 58.4. He only offers it after you bring him the Dark Iron Map from Ironband’s Compound through the Underground Map quest.

Where is the Hall of Thanes entrance?

It’s under Ironforge in Old Ironforge, around 43.5, 52.0. From the Great Forge, face the High Seat and take the cobwebbed corridor down on your left, then follow the path to the bridge over the lava.

Can Horde do the Hall of Thanes?

It’s built as an Alliance dungeon with its entrance inside Ironforge, and The Restless Dead and Old Ironforge Incursion are Alliance quests. Horde players have Ragefire Chasm and the new Ruins of Lordaeron outside Undercity in the same level range.

Where are the Dwarven Heirlooms?

They come from the burial urns and chests spread through the dungeon, and you need 8 of them for Thom Filch. Loot every urn and chest you pass so you’re not backtracking for the last few.

What level should I be for the Hall of Thanes?

The dungeon is tuned for level 13 to 18, and its quests unlock from level 9 or 10. A party around level 15 is the usual recommendation, and the boss loot needs level 13 to wear.

He doesn't write about anything he hasn't actually played, which usually isn't a problem since he plays too much of everything anyway. Recent obsessions include ARC Raiders, Battlefield, For Honor, and Rainbow Six Siege, with plenty of others in rotation. He's also worked behind the scenes for a well-known gaming creator on video production and editorial pieces, so the guides here are shaped as much by that side of the industry as by the hours logged in-game.
