10 Best Wallpapers on Wallpaper Engine

Wallpaper Engine is a popular software available on Steam that lets you use animated and interactive wallpapers on your computer desktop. Instead of having boring static images as your background, Wallpaper Engine brings your desktop to life with moving scenes, weather effects, audio visualizers, and customizable elements. The software runs quietly in the background and automatically pauses when you open games or programs to save computer resources. With thousands of community-created wallpapers available through the Steam Workshop, you can easily find and download wallpapers that match your style, from peaceful nature scenes to futuristic sci-fi landscapes.

Choosing the best wallpapers from Wallpaper Engine is completely subjective and depends on personal taste. This list reflects my preferences for desktop backgrounds that look great without being distracting.

I prefer wallpapers that are not too bright or flashy, with subtle animation like gentle rain or slow clouds rather than intense movement. While anime wallpapers dominate Wallpaper Engine, I focused on calm, soothing, and high-quality options that avoid anime styles. I also prioritized wallpapers without text or busy elements on the left side, where desktop icons sit.

Most wallpapers include customization options to adjust colors, animations, clocks, and other settings. We will cover installation and customization at the end of this guide.

How to Install the Wallpapers

Clicking the Wallpaper Links takes you to the Steam Workshop page for each wallpaper. Simply press the Subscribe button to add it to your Wallpaper Engine collection. Once subscribed, open Wallpaper Engine to activate and use the wallpaper on your desktop.

All links go to the official Steam Workshop pages to give proper credit to the creators. I do not own these wallpapers – they are all publicly available through Wallpaper Engine and created by talented community members. We also assume you already own Wallpaper Engine.

Customising Wallpapers

Most Wallpaper Engine wallpapers come with built-in customization settings that let you adjust them to fit your preferences. Standard options include changing the scheme color to match your taskbar, toggling widgets such as clocks and date displays on or off, enabling mouse parallax effects that make the background shift as you move your cursor, adjusting background music volume, and customizing UI colors.

You can access this in the Wallpaper Engine Application, under the enabled wallpaper on the right. The level of customization varies between wallpapers, but most offer numerous ways to make them uniquely yours.

Thomas has been writing game guides for over a year, covering whatever he's currently sunk into. He doesn't write about anything he hasn't actually played, which usually isn't a problem since he plays too much of everything anyway. Rocket League ate enough of his life to get him to Grand Champion, and he's got several max-level, fully geared characters sitting in World of Warcraft from various binges over the years. Recent obsessions include ARC Raiders, Battlefield, For Honor, and Rainbow Six Siege, with plenty of others in rotation. He's also worked behind the scenes for a well-known gaming creator on video production and editorial pieces, so the guides here are shaped as much by that side of the industry as by the hours logged in-game. Every tip, build, and location in his guides comes from his own playthroughs. If he hasn't tested it, it doesn't get published.
