Overview

The Siege X (also known as Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege or R6 Siege) update delivers one of the most significant shifts in Rainbow Six Siege history. Dual Front introduces a new pace of play with a more flexible strategy, dynamic maps, and forgiving mechanics, including respawning. With major UI, audio, and gameplay upgrades, Siege X offers a cleaner and more accessible experience for both newcomers and veterans. Dual Front is a permanent 6v6 mode added in Siege X.

Whether you’re jumping into Dual Front for the first time or exploring the revamped systems, Siege X is designed to reward adaptability and teamwork. Stay tuned for more seasonal content and balance updates as Siege continues to evolve.

Siege’s in-game information panel

In the game, menus explain various aspects of the game mode, organized into sections for Gameplay, Sectors, Features, and Map. The information provided is helpful, but it does not cover the entire picture.

The in-game menu can be accessed in-game by selecting ‘More info’, then going to the ‘How it works’ pane of the menu.

Gameplay

"how it works" section of the main menu, showing the tabs of each Gameplay tooltip. This is the Gameplay section.

GAME MODE
Attack and defend simultaneously to secure all enemy sectors before they secure all of yours, or before time runs out. The team to capture all enemy sectors first wins.

SYMMETRIC ROLES
Attackers and Defenders are available to both teams throughout the entire match so that a team can defend their active sector while attacking the enemy at the same time.

ASSIGNMENTS
At a random point during the match, an assignment will start as a secondary objective to securing sectors. Complete it to gain an advantage for your team.

QUITTING PENALTIES
There are no quitting penalties for leaving a match in Dual Front, as joining in-progress matches is enabled.

Sectors

"how it works" section of the main menu, showing the tabs of each Gameplay tooltip. This is the Sectors section.

SABOTAGE KIT
Sabotage kits are used to secure the enemy’s sector. Every player carries a kit, and it can be planted anywhere inside the objective room of an active sector to begin securing it.

SABOTAGE PREVENTION
Once a sabotage kit is deployed, the defending team has 120 seconds to destroy it to retain control over their sector.

SECTOR CHECKPOINTS
Securing a sector has two checkpoints, which lock-in that amount of progress permanently. If the defending team destroys the sabotage kit, the next attempt will take less time to secure the sector.

SECTOR DISRUPTION
If a team takes too long to secure a sector, it enters a disrupted state at fixed intervals throughout the match, which reduces the time needed to secure it. Once fully disrupted, planting a sabotage kit secures it instantly.

Features

"how it works" section of the main menu, showing the tabs of each Gameplay tooltip. This is the Featured section.

DEVICE & AMMO REFILL
An Operator’s devices and ammo refills over time. Only a limited number of a device can be deployed at one time. Going over that limit removes the oldest one deployed.

DRONE BATTERY
Drones have a limited battery and stop working once it’s depleted.

DRONE AFTER DEATH
Dead players can deploy a drone on a spectated ally to gather intel while waiting to respawn.

SECOND CHANCE
Bullet damage always downs a player before killing them, and health while downed is increased. If health is depleted to zero while downed, the player dies and can respawn.

Map

"how it works" section of the main menu, showing the tabs of each Gameplay tooltip. This is the Map section.

SECTORS
The map is divided into sectors across 2 sides: Zone A and Zone B. Sectors open one at a time per team, in order. The last sector to open is a team’s base. Secure it to win.

BUFFER ZONES
Buffer zones connect sectors together and are secured when their adjacent sector is. An Operator who enters a hostile buffer zone is revealed to the enemy before dying after a short timer. This prevents peeking into or advancing on a sector too early.

SAFE ZONES
When in one of your team’s uncontested sectors, you can repick your Operator in addition to healing over time.

NEUTRAL SECTOR
In the center of the map is an area that belongs to neither team where the Assignment can appear randomly.

Rainbow Six Siege X – Dual Front Mode Breakdown

The mode takes place on a large, specially designed map divided into three distinct zones as seen on the minimap:

In game minimap as seen in the new mode Dual Front, showing a blue and red lane, with grey in the middle.
  • Attack Lane – Your team pushes toward enemy objectives; this is red.
  • Defense Lane – You protect your objectives from enemy assault; this is the blue zone.
  • Neutral Zone – A shared space for flanking, ambushing, and completing special seasonal assignments. This is Grey.

Both teams attack and defend simultaneously, creating constant action across the entire map. Games can take up to 25 minutes.

How to Win in Dual Front

There are three total objectives, which create strategic opportunities for teams to shift focus and adapt.

To help implement the flow of play, specific barriers restrict access to the other role’s objective. This helps control the flow of the game and prevents players from playing incorrect roles. This is where the player chooses to be Team A or Team B (essentially choosing Attack or Defense). This closes 1 of 3 lanes.

  • Front A B

Once players pass through the barriers, a warning will appear, indicating that they must return within 3 seconds or risk being eliminated. Players are then required to choose between the two remaining lanes: Red (if attacking) or Grey (to flank or complete secondary assignments). Following the designated lane will lead to a bomb site, where players are assigned to either defuse the bomb or deploy a sabotage kit, depending on their current role.

Operator Pool and Respawns

The new mode offers more consistent gameplay compared to the previous main modes of R6, which used a Last Team Standing (LTS) style. In the old system, once a player died, they would be out for several minutes, resulting in downtime. The new mode addresses this by minimizing respawn cooldowns, allowing players to remain active most of the time. It also permits players to swap operators and play different roles, whether attacking or defending.

Current operator pool in Siege X Dual Front, this is limited compared to other modes. Current as of January 2025.

Players can still swap operators in-game as long as they are in the spawn area, and can return to the spawn to swap operators regardless of time passed.

  • Operators are selected from a curated and rotating pool.
  • Teams can mix Attackers and Defenders.
  • Players have unlimited respawns, with a 30-second respawn timer.
  • Players can switch Operators mid-match to adapt to evolving strategies.

This system differs significantly from traditional Rainbow Six Siege gameplay, offering more flexibility than the original Last Team Standing format used in R6 Siege.

Ping / Communication Wheel

A new feature in R6 Siege is the ping wheel, which addresses the importance of communication in the game. Players who cannot communicate verbally are often viewed as liabilities by competitive players. To mitigate this issue, Siege has introduced a ping wheel that allows players to convey vital information to their teammates effectively. This addition helps reduce the impact of non-communicative players, benefiting the community overall and potentially lowering toxicity.

Communication Wheel added by the new big update in Siege X R6

To somewhat counteract the non-communicative players, Siege has added a ping wheel that helps effectively communicate vital information to teammates and reduces their liability, which is a net positive for the community and potentially lowers toxicity. Choosing an option triggers a visual notification on screen for all teammates, as well as automatically posting the notification in the team chat.

This quality-of-life update reflects Ubisoft’s continued efforts to modernize the R6 X experience and make Rainbow Six more accessible to newer players.

Dual Front Map Features and Environmental Interactions

Frontline has added more dynamic mechanics to maps in the game, allowing players to utilize interactive elements to tip the balance of battles in their favor.

The new Dual Front mode introduced in Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege X adds interactive mechanics never seen before in previous R6 Siege game modes.

Interactive Elements

When those elements are interacted with, they tend to help control an area, for example, dealing damage, throwing fire on the floor, which damages players if they cross it, or concussing players to gain an advantage in a gunfight, etc.

  • Gas
  • Gas Pipes – Explode when shot, creating fire hazards. This effect lasts for 2-4 seconds before bursting and releasing a brief burst of fire onto the floor.
  • Fire Extinguishers – Release smoke and concussive effects when damaged. Primarily acting as a smoke screen in place of throwing a smoke bomb.
  • Neutral Electricity – Prevents placement of gadgets or explosives, similar to a bandit’s battery.
  • Extinguisher 1

Seasonal Assignments

The Neutral Zone features rotating seasonal objectives, including hostage extractions, that grant powerful team bonuses upon completion. These assignments update each season. This can be viewed in the main menu, in the Overview tab.

Operation Daybreak Operator Evac assignment, lore for the new update and showing what operators can be played during this season.

The current season is Operation Daybreak, where the operator’s evac assignment states Dokkaebi is being held hostage by the Keres Legion. Do whatever it takes to bring her back alive. This is a hostage situation in which the teams must rescue her, and doing so would give the team that does so an advantage.

This determines the operator roster and changes by season, allowing for new strategies to be created each season.

Community Feedback and Observations

Player Experience

primarily from Reddit.com, from multiple communities such as RainbowSixSiege, and Rainbow6.

  • Some players report that directional audio can feel inconsistent or less clear in certain areas.
  • Feedback highlights that defending can feel passive on larger maps when action shifts away from a player’s zone.
  • The curated Operator pool and mix of roles have been viewed positively for encouraging new strategies.
  • These gameplay systems reflect the ongoing evolution of Rainbow Six and reinforce Siege’s identity as a tactical shooter.

Many users report that the new changes to some maps are primarily lighting changes that Ubisoft is trying to portray as a complete overhaul. At the same time, some features are widely considered a net positive, such as the communication wheel and showing of ranks via the in-game scoreboard. This allows for more toxicity in-game, as the transparency of ranks may make players feel disadvantaged during ranked modes and lead them to express their anger.

UI changes are typically frowned upon as people generally dislike change; this seems to be a common complaint in the Reddit forums about the new Rainbow Six Siege update. The game becoming free may open more opportunities for hackers to enter the game, as there is less risk associated with losing access to an account.

The Bans mid-round feature has confused many players, as they’ve banned their operator mains instead of selecting them, resulting in further frustration; however, this should be short-lived as people get used to the update. The intention is to allow players to choose bans more based on countering what happened in the previous round, making bans more crucial and tactical. For example, if an Ace keeps opening a specific hard wall, then killing multiple people, he’d be considered a good ban in the following game, forcing the Ace to play as a different hard breacher.

I believe it was a net positive update and welcome the new changes.

Thomas has been writing game guides for over a year, covering whatever he's currently sunk into. He doesn't write about anything he hasn't actually played, which usually isn't a problem since he plays too much of everything anyway. Rocket League ate enough of his life to get him to Grand Champion, and he's got several max-level, fully geared characters sitting in World of Warcraft from various binges over the years. Recent obsessions include ARC Raiders, Battlefield, For Honor, and Rainbow Six Siege, with plenty of others in rotation. He's also worked behind the scenes for a well-known gaming creator on video production and editorial pieces, so the guides here are shaped as much by that side of the industry as by the hours logged in-game. Every tip, build, and location in his guides comes from his own playthroughs. If he hasn't tested it, it doesn't get published.
