What Is Megabonk?
Megabonk is a fast-paced roguelike created by a solo developer. It gained popularity for its chaotic gameplay, layered movement mechanics, and deep item synergies. Each run is different because the game relies heavily on random generation for loot, upgrades, and events. The goal is to survive waves of enemies, build powerful combinations of weapons and tomes, and defeat bosses before the timer runs out.
There are multiple playable characters, each with unique traits, and every 10-minute run challenges you to adapt on the fly. Unlike most roguelites, Megabonk doesn’t include permanent stat progression between runs. Instead, players unlock new characters, weapons, tomes, and items that change how future runs play out.
Getting Started
Choosing Your First Character
When you start, only Fox and Sir Oofie are unlocked.
- Fox is ideal for beginners, focusing on luck and balanced stats.
- Sir Oofie (The Knight) is better suited to players already familiar with roguelikes like Vampire Survivors.
Additional characters are unlocked by completing challenges. For instance, blocking 500 damage with armor as Sir Oofie unlocks the Aegis weapon, which in turn helps you unlock Athena later. Most new weapons and characters are tied to specific in-game tasks or achievements.
Players typically aim to unlock the following characters, which are:
- CL4NK (Complete Forest Tier 1, and buy the Revolver) – Required to progress the game
- Robinette (Complete Forest Tier 2) – Meta is to get golden shield and Kevin
- Noelle (Use a Microwave to duplicate Ice Crystal 3 times in a row, and buy Frostwalker Weapon) – Accounts for 8 of top 10 in the WR Kills Leaderboards today.
Understanding Tiers and Levels
Each run consists of tiers, which function like stages.
- Tier 1 is available by default.
- Each tier lasts about 10 minutes.
- Completing a tier rewards silver and contributes to unlock progress.
Early tiers help you understand how XP, items, and combat flow work. Focus on learning how upgrades interact instead of trying to rush progression.
Basic Gameplay Loop
- Start a run and spawn in a map (usually the forest first).
- Defeat enemies to collect blue XP crystals, and break all Pots.
- Level up to gain access to new tomes, weapons, or perks.
- Explore the map to locate shrines, chests, and Maui & NPCs that offer upgrades or challenges.
- Defeat elites and mini-bosses to earn rare loot.
- Locate and defeat the tier boss to complete the run.
The loop is simple: explore, collect, upgrade, and survive.
The detail is efficiency, players learn to move around faster, choose more optimal items to suit a build, have different characters and weapons & playstyle.
Learning the Essentials
XP, Gold, and Chests
- XP Crystals: Dropped by enemies and used to level up.
- Gold: Earned from kills or challenges, used to open premium chests.
- Chests: Provide most of your upgrades. Paid chests yield stronger items, while free ones give smaller bonuses like minor attack speed increases.
- Vase: Contain multiple Gold coins
Open as many chests as possible since your item loadout defines your build each run.
The Gold required to open your next Chest is displayed on the top right, if the Chest is Gold, it is free.
Buying Items in game

In game, there is a NPC called “Shady Guy“, he gives items to the player for some coin – this is typically regarded as expensive but worthwhile.
Pick-up Items
There are items dropped by mobs that help the player in some way:
- Heart – Heals the Player
- Magnet – All gold and Crystals in a radius are drawn to the player
- Banana – A new weapon that attacks players in a boomerang style – players will gain a hidden achievement for finding this item, it is considered a powerful weapon, unlockable in the store after the run ends.
- Clock – Freezes the world for a few seconds – Overpowered.
- Speed Boost – Gives the player alot of speed for a period of time
There are many pick up items the player could pick up – overpowered examples such as the Time Pickup, this freezes the world and allows for a few seconds of attacks, or navigation for the player.
Shrines and Challenges
Shrines are marked on the minimap by exclamation icons. Activating them spawns challenges or grants temporary bonuses. There are multiple Shrines, such as the Shrine of Succ (Major Magnet that pulls all experience and gold you haven’t picked up, making for major levels later on), Maui Shrines (Easter Heads), and the unnamed Cage Shrines, which reward Boosts, Stat increases, or items. Players typically go around activating as many Shrines as they can, breaking pots, and locating the Boss Portal.
Stand inside the activation circle until the shrine effect is granted. For some, you will need to interact using E.
Defeating Bosses also has the same effect as the Shrine of Succ, where all Experience and Gold are picked up immediately.
Not all Shrines are created equal. Some aren’t good for your objective.
While Shrines typically give a bonus, sometimes it’s a tradeoff, for example:
Greed Shrines – they work differently to reward shrines, they increase the difficulty of the mode by 5% and gives the player some gold, which makes for higher gold gain, Experience rewards, and speeds up the ramp up of player’s abilities. Some players will not want this, others may.

Boss’s Curse – Spawns another boss – this could be a good or bad thing, depending on the player’s aim, though beginners should probably avoid it until they have a grasp on the game more so and are able to blast the singular boss that exists in the level without this curse.

Summon the Challenge! – Adds a miniboss to the level – again, for further experience gains and gold, though should be avoided while learning the game.

The Boss Portal
Each tier ends with a boss portal, highlighted by a red marker on the minimap.
Summon the boss only when ready. It’s best to explore the area, collect items, and raise your stats first. Many players wait until around the eight-minute mark before triggering the boss fight.
You know you’re nearby one when you see Red Streaks in the air. This indicates you’re within the vicinity of a Boss Portal – take a note of where it is, and return when you’re ready.

This is how you complete the level, players should have some bonuses, upgrades and levels before spawning the boss, and attempt to clear this boss.
After defeating the boss:
- All remaining XP on the map is collected automatically.
- You earn silver currency for unlocks.
- A final “swarm phase” begins, allowing you to continue fighting for extra rewards.
Final Swarm Tactic
Some players of the top level defeat the boss and immediately go towards the Gate to teleport, not going inside but instead sitting there until they deem a situation too dangerous to continue, spamming E to go through before dying at the last second.

This is a good way of squeezing extra experience and gold gains, as final swarms have an immense number of mobs that reward experience and gold.
This is a risky move and should probably take some time to get used to using correctly, as some runs can end this way, especially for newer players who may not know when it’s too dangerous.
Upgrades and other Items
Generally, for newer players, it is best to stay in Tier 1 Forest – to ensure getting new unlocks is easier than ever, as here enemies have less health, you are more able to focus on getting new unlocks, such as getting Agility to Level 5 to unlock the item it does.
The optimal Strategies tend to use specific items that vary over time. So it is ideal to aim to get a Toggler, which requires completing 40 Quests, as well as having the Items unlocked, so some players would prefer to unlock most, if not all, items.
This brings us to an important point: Set Specific Aims for Each Run. This means you should take note of the potential unlocks you can achieve in a run and dedicate your efforts toward obtaining those unlocks. For example, I focused on leveling the Damage Tome to level 7 to unlock the Mega Chad character. In my next run, I aimed to break 20 more pots, as I needed to break a total of 150 pots to unlock something and had already broken 130.
You can concentrate on multiple quests, and choose abilities that go hand in hand with whatever the Quest is, for example, completing the Quest ‘Get Agility Tome to Level 5″ would be helpful with an already fast character, and a weapon that could be used at high speeds, as well as life steal to stay alive long enough to gather the Agility Tomes. Note that not all characters have equal chances of each Tome.
Typically, Every Character has similar unlocks: kill the first boss under 6 minutes, defeat the Final Boss…
Basic Survival Tips
- Avoid touching enemies; contact deals damage.
- Break pots and barrels for extra loot and power-ups.
- Watch your jump height to prevent damage from falling.
- Prioritize lifesteal or health regeneration early for sustain.
- Experiment with builds; there’s no single correct way to win. (But a Meta does exist.)
- At 7 Minutes remaining, a Stone Golem appears.
- At 6 Minutes remaining, there will be a Swarm Incoming – which is a large wave of enemies.
The Megabonk Meta: Best Items and Synergies
Items define your build far more than level-ups. Knowing which ones dominate the meta can drastically improve your results. Don’t get all unlockables you can afford, as those less efficient will also start appearing in your runs, making optimal runs less likely – though once the Toggler is unlocked, this doesn’t apply anymore.
Green Items (Common)
Moldy Cheese
A top-tier early item that stacks damage quickly. It benefits from your bonus damage and melts bosses faster than most low-tier items.
The Key
Unlocked after opening 25 chests. It increases chest efficiency and works perfectly with the Credit Card (purple item) brought from the Shady NPC. Many players duplicate keys because they drastically improve item farming.
Blue Items (Rare)
Kevin
An item that damages you over time but triggers other effects. Works best with Electric Plug and Golden Shield.
- Electric Plug deals area damage when triggered.
- Golden Shield gives gold when hit, generating income.
Build lifesteal or regeneration before using Kevin to stay alive.
Idle Juice
Doubles your damage if you remain still for roughly a minute. Core for stationary “ghost farming” builds.
Echo Shard
Creates additional XP crystals, helping you level faster. It’s unlocked by raising the XP Tome to level 8.
Purple Items (Epic)
Credit Card
Boosts luck each time you open a chest. It replaces the need for a Luck Tome and frees up a slot for Size or Cooldown tomes. Multiple Credit Cards stack to create extremely high drop rates.
Cursed Grabbies
Unlocked by raising Curse to level 10. Increases spawn rates and difficulty, but also delivers major damage scaling. Essential for high-kill leaderboard builds.
Grandma’s Special Tonic
A strong area-of-effect damage item. Best for builds already using the Luck Tome, though it competes with Credit Card for the purple slot.
Legendary Items
Soul Harvester
Unlocked by surviving six minutes in a ghost wave. It collects red souls that automatically target enemies and bosses. When combined with Smart Targeting, it can defeat bosses without manual aiming.
Big Bonk
Currently one of the strongest damage-dealing items in the game. It scales heavily in late runs and consistently ranks near the top for total damage.
Holy Book
Provides healing and solid damage, often used with Kevin-based builds for sustain.
Sucky Magnet
Allows XP collection from long distances while standing still, making it vital for idle or high-kill strategies.
Building Efficiently
- Focus on synergy, such as Kevin + Plug + Shield.
- Banishing items can narrow your drop pool to target specific colors.
- Avoid endless run resets; chasing perfect RNG kills progress so some imperfections is fine and expected.
- Use microwaves only when ready to duplicate valuable items.
Final Beginner Tips
- Each tier lasts about ten minutes; use time efficiently.
- Don’t fear experimentation; failed runs teach valuable lessons.
- Focus on mastering one or two characters first.
- Always activate shrines and interact with moi NPCs for extra buffs.
- Prioritize movement control; it’s more valuable than raw stats.
- Favor synergy and scaling over flat damage bonuses.
- Most importantly, play to learn rather than to perfect.
