Genshin Impact’s latest update has introduced Lauma, a highly anticipated 5-star character who brings revolutionary lunar reaction mechanics to the game. As players navigate this new addition to the roster, many are questioning whether Lauma is worth the primogem investment, especially without access to premium support characters.

This comprehensive character guide examines Lauma’s viability across different team compositions, budget-friendly alternatives, and optimal build strategies. Whether you’re a free-to-play player working with limited resources or a veteran looking to maximize Lauma’s potential, this analysis covers everything you need to make informed decisions about pulling, building, and utilizing this new lunar-element specialist.

We’ll break down Lauma’s artifact priorities, weapon alternatives, talent leveling strategies, and synergistic team compositions that work effectively without requiring expensive 5-star supports. Additionally, we’ll provide a detailed analysis of Aino, the complementary 4-star character introduced alongside Lauma, to help you understand how these new additions fit into the evolving Genshin Impact meta.

Is Lauma Worth Pulling Without Premium Supports?

This question has been circulating widely in the Genshin Impact community, prompting us to provide a comprehensive analysis. Lauma is classified as a premium support character who deals massive elemental damage by converting standard bloom reactions into lunar bloom, a new lunar reaction introduced with Ineffa in the 5.8 update.

Since Lauma’s kit revolves around this elemental reaction, she requires a team composition featuring hydro and dendro characters to reach her full potential. Currently, there’s no ‘lunar aggravate/quicken’ reaction available. Due to this team limitation, the most commonly recommended “best teams” typically include Nilou, Yelan, and Nahida.

However, if you don’t own these characters and prefer not to spend primogems on them while still wanting Lauma, several 4-star characters can effectively pair with her when properly built.

Compatible 4-Star Characters for Lauma Teams

The following 4-star characters work excellently with Lauma:

4 Star Character Compatible with Lauma
Barbara
Collei
Xingqiu
YaoYao
Kirara
Aino
Candace

Note: We’re focusing on her lunar bloom specialty and not listing electro team options, though including electro characters won’t diminish her value.

Team Option 1: Lauma, Xingqiu, Collei, Barbara

Team Option 2: Lauma, Aino, Kirara, YaoYao

Lauma offers excellent team flexibility with hydro-dendro-electro combinations, all featuring strong support units. Most characters (except Aino) have early-game materials available for leveling and ascension.

Verdict: We absolutely recommend pulling for Lauma even without her ‘premium’ supports!

Best Artifacts for Lauma

Lauma has two equally effective artifact sets, depending on your preferred build approach:

Lauma Weapon Options and Alternatives

While pulling Lauma’s signature weapon typically provides optimal performance, budget-friendly alternatives exist for players managing primogem resources.

Best F2P Option

Blackmarrow Lantern – New craftable weapon, ideal 4-star choice for free-to-play players

Weapon Alternatives List

If you miss the 50/50 on Nightweaver’s Looking Glass or her banner expires, these alternatives work excellently:

  • Wandering Evenstar
  • Blackmarrow Lantern
  • Sacrificial Fragments
  • Etherlight Spindlelute
  • Favonius Codex
  • Fruit of Fulfillment
  • Mappa Mare

Talent Priority

Skill > Burst > Normal Attack

  • Skill – Laumas’ skill is the primary damage output of her kit; this takes top priority.
  • Burst- Her burst gives stacks of Pale Hymn, which, in short, boosts her damage through lunar bloom reactions.
  • Normal Attack- This is the last talent to focus on, as her kit is not centred on using any regular attacks per rotation.

Aino Character Analysis

Aino becomes available early in the Song of the Welkin Moon quest, similar to how Kachina joins during the Natlan Archon Quest. Despite being a free unit, Aino provides solid value with specific limitations to Nod-Krai team compositions.

Aino’s Role and Performance

Aino functions as a hydro application unit, though her hydro application rate is slower compared to premium hydro supports like Furina. She works effectively in multiple team compositions, particularly excelling in lunar charge teams with Ineffa and upcoming characters like Flins.

Building Recommendations

Current Advice:

  • Build to a moderate level in preparation for future Nod-Krai content
  • Not recommended: Crowning talents or leveling to 90 at this time
  • C0 performance is decent; it becomes significantly more useful at C6 with elemental reaction damage boosts

Aino Weapon Options

Primary choice: Flame-Forged Insight [only available through the Sunspray Summer Resort event]

  • Elemental Mastery 36-165,
  • When Electro-Charged, Lunar-Charged, Bloom, or Lunar-Bloom is triggered, restore 12,
  • 24 Elemental Energy and increase Elemental Mastery by 60-120 for 15 seconds. This effect can be triggered once every 15 seconds and can occur even when the equipping character is off-field.

Alternative 1: Master Key [The new craftable claymore of the Nod-Krai weapon series]

  • Energy Recharge 13.3% – 61.3%,
  • Upon causing an Elemental Reaction, increases Elemental Mastery by 60-120 for 12s. Moonsign: Ascendant Gleam: Elemental Mastery from this effect is further increased by 60-120. This effect can be triggered even if the equipping character is off the field.

Alternative 2: Makhiara Aquamarine

  • Elemental Mastery 36 – 165,
  • The following effect will trigger every 10s: The equipping character will gain 24% of their Elemental Mastery as bonus ATK for 12s, with nearby party members gaining 30% – 48 % of this buff for the same duration. Multiple instances of this weapon can allow this buff to stack. This effect will still trigger even if the character is not on the field.

Aino Artifact Recommendations

Focus entirely on Elemental Mastery builds since Aino primarily functions as a reaction-support unit.

Primary Set: Silken Moon’s Serenade

2-Piece: +20% Energy Recharge (essential for burst-dependent hydro application) 4-Piece: Gleaming Moon effect providing 60-120 Elemental Mastery and 10% lunar charge reaction boost per effect

Alternative Artifact Sets

  • Noblesse Oblige: Burst damage boost + team damage increase
  • Flower of Paradise Lost: +40% bloom reaction damage with up to 100% extra damage through stacking
  • Gilded Dreams: Elemental Mastery focus
  • Emblem of Severed Fate: Energy and burst optimization

Aino Talent Priority

Burst > Skill > Normal Attack

Similarly to Lauma, her Burst deals the highest damage and should therefore take priority, followed by Skill, then Normal Attacks.

“I’ve been an avid player of Genshin since version 1.3 during the first lantern rite event, and now have been able to have all but 7 characters of which are limited 5 stars. Since this current update I’ve spent all my available time playing the new quests and exploring the region, without having completed this first quest I can say these characters are the most captivating personalities I’ve personally felt for genshin in a while, Lauma specifically while initially I had little to no opinion on her within the few hours of meeting her in game and playing as her I can say she is truly going to become one of my favourite units”

He doesn't write about anything he hasn't actually played, which usually isn't a problem since he plays too much of everything anyway. Rocket League ate enough of his life to get him to Grand Champion, and he's got several max-level, fully geared characters sitting in World of Warcraft from various binges over the years. Recent obsessions include ARC Raiders, Battlefield, For Honor, and Rainbow Six Siege, with plenty of others in rotation. He's also worked behind the scenes for a well-known gaming creator on video production and editorial pieces, so the guides here are shaped as much by that side of the industry as by the hours logged in-game. Every tip, build, and location in his guides comes from his own playthroughs. If he hasn't tested it, it doesn't get published.
